Arpita Mehta and Anita Dongre, designers whose work ranges from minimal luxury to craft at the heart of opulence, launched their flagship stores in Mumbai and Hyderabad, respectively, this month. The timing seems just right, given that some semblance of normalcy is returning in time for the festive season.
Known for her signature ruffled saris, mirror-work techniques and bohemian-chic aesthetic, Mehta’s store in Khar—her first—showcases her part-tropical, part-luxe aesthetic, with a dusty-pink exterior, terrazzo-tiled flooring and furniture in cane, velvet and antique silver. The setting highlights the colourful clothes with their simple, clean lines. Apart from the saris, the store also has other signature pieces like jacket dresses and ghararas.
Dongre’s store in Banjara Hills is inspired by Rajasthani royalty. Rich colours of Jaipur’s iconic blue, green and red are balanced with their paler shades, as well as elements of architecture such as arches and stone carvings.
The menswear and womenswear offerings include Dongre’s signature bridal couture, ready-to-wear, jewellery and sustainable luxury brands, and are replete with techniques such as gota patti, intricate embroidery and meticulously handwoven fabrics.
Arpita Mehta is open at Rajgir Apartments, Road No.8, Khar West, Mumbai; and Anita Dongre at Road No.10, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.
