Bollywood’s Gregory Peck would have been a hundred years old on 26th September, 2023. Born Dharmdev Pishorimal Anand, the Evergreen Star Dev Anand has left us a legacy of some incredible music through his 114 films that spanned over five decades.

He has worked with directors like Guru Dutt as well as Vijay Anand! Dev Anand worked with heroines like Khursheed, Kamini Kaushal, Suraiyya, Madhubala, Nargis, Nimmi, Geeta Bali, Kalpana Kartik, Suchitra Sen, Waheeda Rahman, Sadhana, Shakila, Tanuja, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Tina Munim and many more! Now do you see why this week, it’s the songs that will teach us money lessons?

Song 1: Abhi Na Jaao Chhodkar Ke Dil Abhi Bhara Nahi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfEQgoVi7P4

The inimitable poet Sahir Ludhianvi wrote this delightful song where Dev Anand is trying to persuade Sadhna to not leave him because ‘dil abhi bhara nahi’. Just as we behave when we jump headlong into investing. We are as enamoured as Dev Anand when we see endless possibilities of making our money work.

But the markets are volatile and they can bring you lows. That’s when your financial planners will come in handy. They know what you are going through. So they can help you through the lows, and keep you invested. Short term goals are fine, but if you grit your teeth and dig your heels in, you will make money in the long haul. And it helps if you keep your family in the know, so they can support you too. Enjoy Sahir’s incredible lyric writing.

Song 2: Ek Ghar Banaunga Tere Ghar Ke Samne

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpahsJWRBiI

It’s 1963 and there were no special effects available except in camera editing, but what a delightful song! The beauty of Nutan distilled into a glass and Dev Anand making a promise of building a house in front of hers! The movie is about a rivalry between two rich men united by a young architect (Dev Anand) who teaches the two men a lesson by building identical homes. For those of us who dream of owning a home, the song is a great money lesson.

Nutan reminds us all,‘Ghar ka banaana koi aasan kaam nahi’ (It’s not an easy task, this building a home) to which Dev Anand answers, ‘Sacchi lagan ho toh parbat bhi dhool hai.’ (determination helps you decimate mountains). Since many home loans are available today, things are much easier for you and you can choose to avail the one that suits your needs best.

Song 3: Sun Ja Dil Ki Daastaan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6I1JahC6VE

This beautiful song about the night is something that should inspire you to step out of your comfort zone to try something new. Anyone who has held a guitar in their hands knows that Dev Anand is not really strumming that guitar, but the words…Aah! The words are more than just a love song. Consider the lyrics:Ek baar chal diye, gar tujhe pukar ke, laut kar na aayenge kaafile bahaar ke…

Do you heed to the call of opportunity when it comes knocking at your door? It knocks only once, so decide now… When investing, you too will be plagued by doubts. It’s not easy, giving up your cosy world and putting your hard-earned money into a new stock. As the song says,‘Zindagi ke geet ki dhun badal ke dekh le!’

This song is all about taking risks, and winning.

Song 4: Kahin Pe Nigahen, Kahin Pe Nishana

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoHnHnB4_js

The beautiful Waheeda Rahman is leading the determined man away from the fugitive who is hiding in her home. In the lyrics she offers clues to his escape. But that’s in the film. And as much as the song and the film are fascinating, this song offers a valuable money lesson. Simply put, it asks you to be focussed in everything that you do with your money. As the title of the song reminds us that we may be getting distracted by this offer or that shiny object in our path. But if you are focussed, you will reach your financial goals.

Song 5: Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpLyDTEw3Z4

What could be the quintessential feminist song, this should be the anthem of every investor, new or experienced, isn’t it? Shouldn’t we do as the lyrics suggest: Koi Na Roko Dil Ki Udaan Ko’ ?

When you put all your attention in the financial instruments that you are going to work with, then it becomes important that you display the same passion that Waheeda Rahman shows in the song. Risk taking is a part of an investor’s life. And this song celebrates the life that takes those risks.

Song 6: Tadbeer Se Bigdi Huyi Taqdeer Bana Le

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgwfvDh7cPc

It’s a song that asks you to trust your instincts and take that chance and invest in stocks you think are going to do well. Let’s say everyone is running after value stocks, and you are interested in a growth stock. Don’t hesitate because you are doing something your friends aren’t. There are opportunities to see your money grow in all kinds of investment opportunities. What you need to realise is that you are not alone in your journey. Take that chance and even if you have taken a few losses, you must keep the faith and see your fortunes change.
