Aparshakti Khurana-starrer ‘Jubilee’: 4 money lessons investors can learn

Jubilee teaches money lessons such as never giving up, investing in learning about a business, betting on people instead of chance, and understanding the dirt of a business to thrive.

Know your business, negotiate, bet on people, gain knowledge, pursue dreams, be ambitious, stay clean, and don't give up.Premium
Know your business, negotiate, bet on people, gain knowledge, pursue dreams, be ambitious, stay clean, and don't give up.

When I watched Jubilee on Amazon Prime Video, I did not expect to learn money lessons from a show about the magic of making movies. But some lessons are like a googly on the cricket field. It comes out of nowhere and bowls you out.

Set around the time India became independent, Jubilee is a story of a film studio where dreams come true and yes, the road to those dreams are paved with unsurpassed ambition, machinations from rivals, sleazebag producers, avaricious distributors, the politics of the heart and a dark night of the soul.

How did Madan Kumar become a star of the silver screen? This is his journey, and his path intersects with that of a talented young man called Jay Khanna who is a refugee from Pakistan, hoping to make his mark in the movies too. This is brilliant storytelling by Atul Sabharwal and presented by Vikramaditya Motwane and Soumik Sen.

A hole In your shoe means you’re working hard for the money

Jay Khanna lives in the refugee camp in Bombay, and does not like the label. He’s not satisfied with the lot that fate has thrown at him, so he steps out to look for a job. He has to survive in the city that does not hesitate in throwing a shoe at him for travelling ticketless in a tram.

But no matter what life throws at him, he knows how to use it to his advantage. He takes the shoe thrown at him to a cobbler. ‘Can you use the sole from this shoe to repair mine?’ His shoe has a hole in it. The cobbler looks at him and says,’if life is throwing a shoe at you, how can I charge anything from you?’

A wonderful lesson in not giving up when everything looks bleak. But his luck changes and he gets a job at the canteen at the movie studio. Again, a life lesson. He realises that he could take food from the canteen for his family every day, and tells his boss he will accept food but a lesser salary. Negotiate!

Know the business before you jump in

Nilofer is a nautch girl from Lucknow, who has saved up money and she too is in Bombay because there were partition riots. She realises quickly that the weak do not survive in the city. She pays for information and the bartender gives her all the details about the who’s who in the club.

You may not approve of the life she lives, becoming a protegee of a sleazy rich producer, but she knows that she will need lots of money and a godfather if she wants to make it big in the movie business.

She inadvertently teaches us a lesson about money. If you need to get a foot in the door in a new business, you need to invest a little money learning about the business which will help you jump right into the deep end without fear.

Bet on people, not in a game of chance

The studio projectionist has seen the auditions of all the hopefuls who want to become a star. Does he dare to disturb the universe and tell his boss that he wants to be considered for the position? No. But he’s a loyal man, being sent off to prevent his boss’s wife from eloping with the new actor who could become the next superstar.

Aparshakti Khurana plays the everyman Binod Das who dazzles on the silver screen as the new star, Madan Kumar. He adjusts to the new role: a new house, a new car and the deference he receives from everyone at the studio. And yes, the boss even entrusts him to do the right thing when the studio faces problems. During censorship of movie songs, he puts on a disguise and manages to smuggle songs to Sri Lanka.

The studio colleague reminds him. You are diligent and ambitious without being mean, so I bet on you.

Just as Madan Kumar has invested in a young man he has seen dancing with abandonment in the train. Madan sees talent in Jay Khanna and inspires him to pursue his dream of directing his own movie and owning his own studio.

No business is faultless and flawlessly clean. But you can thrive

This show inspires everyone to stick to pursuing your passion. This show teaches us a valuable lesson: Some understand the nature of the dirt they’re stepping into and know how to survive. Others jump in, but fight with everything they have to stay clean. Jay takes a loan to create a studio, buys second hand equipment to have control over his film and persuades a producer who is happy making illegal copies of x-rated foreign films to make an original movie. We see the problems he will face, but we empathise. And hope he succeeds.
