From Hell or High Water to The Eyes of Tammy Faye: These 5 movies teach us great money lessons

These 5 movies teach us great money lessons about the importance of avoiding loans, rethinking our housing choices, exercising caution when handling large amounts of money, being aware of con artists and being conscious of where we give our hard-earned money.

Hell Or High Water

oWhen John Wick 4 and Bholaa are occupying the screens in your neighbourhood and you have watched both of them, you turn to seeking out gems that you can watch again. And yes, learn valuable money lessons from these movies.

Lessons on loans: Hell or High Water

This hidden gem on Amazon Prime Video tells you the story of brothers Toby and Tanner who resort to robbing banks because the mortgage payments become impossible.

Recession has hit them all hard and robbing a bank is their last resort because the bank will be foreclosing on their farm - their only source of income.

The film stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as the desperate farmers and Jeff Bridges who plays the Marshall who is on their tail, trying to catch them in the act. Racism, poverty and desperation make this film eminently watchable. None of us will ever rob a bank, but this film works as a cautionary tale when we take on loans.

Everyone wants to own a home, perhaps not: Nomadland

One of the finest films ever made, this multi Oscar, multi film award winning film is part documentary too. The film stars the inimitable Frances McDormand as a woman who has no job when her town just shuts down and she has to learn to live in her car. The survival skills that she picks up as she travels from job to job are amazing.

The community of those who live to travel is just amazing and it makes you long to calculate F-You Money and re-look at the concept of living with Two Suitcases. Director Chloe Zhao makes a convincing argument when she takes Frances McDormand across the most stunning Arizona sunsets and reminds us that we are living like rats, paying mortgages for homes, getting older while just dreaming of living in a small place with the view of the mountains (or the sea).. Watch this wonderful film on Disney+Hotstar

What would you do if you stumbled upon cash? No Country for Old Men

A hunter stumbles into a drug deal gone wrong and finds two million dollars in cash. I have watched this film so often, imagining what I would do with that kind of money. Would I be able to live being hunted by those who want the money?

The film is star studded: Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin. The film is directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and will keep you riveted no matter how many times you watch the film. A hunter finds the drug money, is chased by the man sent to recover the money and yes the cop who is investigating the crime. The chase is gritty and gets more and more desperate.

Watch this movie on Amazon Prime Video. And learn why you should say no to a coin toss.

Can you rob the robbers? The Sting

It’s an Oscar winning caper film where two professional grifters decide to rob the mob boss. What a fun film this is. Starring two gorgeous men Paul Newman and Robert Redford, the film may be old, but the subject isn’t.

The film is set during the Great Depression in America. The grifters need the money so that they never ever have to work again. The mob - very powerful at that time - takes being conned very seriously and will do everything in their power to get the money back to teach other con artists a lesson. The chase, helped by an FBI agent, is a fun watch.

Remember to never make bets on horses, beware of black leather gloves and yes, know that you can never get the money you bet back, ever. The film is on Amazon Prime Video.

Give your hard earned money, redeem your soul : The Eyes of Tammy Faye

From humble beginnings rose a spiritual empire of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. American retirees were giving all their money to the couple who promised them redemption. They preached and collected money and that money went into creating what is known today as a Televangelist network.

Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield star in this film that plays on Disney+Hotstar. Considering how many gurus rule our airwaves, persuading the gullible to part with their money, this film reminds us that we are not alone.
