The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the US federal government has made a special announcement that is drawing the attention of taxpayers. As 2026 begins with major shifts in federal policy, tax rules, and cost-of-living adjustments, the IRS has confirmed a new relief measure. Nearly one million members of the US uniformed services will benefit from a special, one-time payment, which they can retain in full without any federal tax liability.

This payment, disbursed at the end of 2025 itself, has now been formally confirmed by the IRS as tax-free. The announcement has allowed service members and their families to reshape their household finances in 2026 and plan their budgets in the coming months.

The new IRS tax benefit comes at a time when Americans are already dealing with inflationary pressures, higher interest rates, and rising living costs. With household expenses climbing, the relief measure is expected to provide meaningful financial support to eligible recipients.

For those who qualify, this represents more than just a temporary boost. The IRS, in coordination with the US Department of the Treasury, has clarified that the payment will not be subject to federal taxation. This means beneficiaries will not only receive the payment but also avoid the burden of reporting it in their tax returns later in the year.

IRS announces tax benefit - What is it?

The IRS confirmed the financial boost on 16 January, which involves a one-time payment of $1,776 issued in December 2025.

“The Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service today confirmed that supplemental basic allowance for housing payments made to members of the uniformed services in December 2025 are not to be included in income by those who received the payments; they are not taxable,” the IRS said in its announcement. This means the beneficiaries need not report the payment on their tax returns for 2025 or 2026.

This announcement is critical because it confirms that the payment is non-taxable, unlike several other federal benefits announced earlier that needed to be included in the beneficiaries' tax returns.

How does the new IRS tax benefit work?

The $1,776 IRS tax benefit is part of the Warrior Dividend that US President Donald Trump announced in December. “In the One, Big, Beautiful Bill enacted last July, Congress appropriated $2.9 billion to supplement the basic allowance for housing payable to members of the uniformed services. In December, President Donald J. Trump announced that 1,450,000 military service members would receive a special “Warrior Dividend” before Christmas.”

As a result of the IRS's announcement, recipients retain the full value of the payment, which was issued and distributed automatically in December 2025 through standard military pay systems.

The fund arrived directly to most recipients via direct deposit alongside regular pay, while others received it through established military payment channels without having to go through any additional steps.

Who is eligible?

According to the IRS, the $1,776 one-time tax-free payment is given primarily to active-duty members of the uniformed services in pay grades O-6 and below and to eligible Reserve Component members as of 30 November 2025, of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Space Force.
