Verifying the filed income tax return (ITR) is a crucial step after completing the process, whether done offline or online. Failure to verify the ITR renders it invalid and may result in the tax department refusing to process it. Consequently, taxpayers will not receive any refunds until the verification is successfully completed.
There are multiple modes of e-verification, each having its own set of requirements. Presented below is a detailed walkthrough for each mode.
If you wish to instantly e-verify your income tax returns after filing them, using a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a recommended option.
Step 1: Go to the e-verify page and choose the option “I would like to e-verify using DSC”.
Step 2: On the “Verify Your Identity” page, click on the link to download the emsigner utility.
Step 3: Once the emsigner utility is downloaded and installed, indicate that you have completed this step by selecting “I have downloaded and installed emsigner utility” on the “Verify Your Identity” page. Then, click ‘Continue’.
Step 4: On the “Data Sign” page, select your Provider, Certificate, and enter the Provider Password. Click on ‘Sign’.
Upon successful completion, a page confirming your success will appear, along with a transaction ID. Make a note of this transaction ID for future reference. Additionally, you will receive a confirmation message on the email ID and mobile number registered on the e-filing portal.
This is another way wherein you can verify the submission of your ITR online by submitting your Aadhaar Card information and verifying the same using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number. To proceed with the verification process, please follow these steps:
Step 1: Ensure that your PAN (Permanent Account Number) is linked to Aadhaar.
Step 2: Choose the option to verify using a One-Time Password (OTP) sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar.
Step 3: Consent to validate your Aadhaar details and generate the OTP.
Step 4: Enter the 6-digit OTP you received and validate it.
Do you have your email ID registered with your pre-validated and Electronic Verification Code (EVC)-enabled bank account? To initiate the e-verification process, please perform the following steps:
Step 1: Access the e-verify page and choose the option “Through Bank Account”. Proceed by clicking on the “Continue” button.
Step 2: In the “Enter EVC” text box, input the EVC you received on the mobile number and email address associated with your bank account. Then, click on the “e-Verify” button.
Upon successful completion, you will be presented with a page displaying a success message, along with a Transaction ID and EVC. It is important to make a note of the Transaction ID and EVC for future reference. Additionally, a confirmation message will be sent to the email ID and mobile number registered on the e-filing portal.
If you are finding it difficult to verify your ITR after filing it, you may as well do it through your demat account.
Step 1: Access the e-verify page and choose the option “Through demat Account”. Click on the “Continue” button to proceed.
Upon generating the EVC, it will be sent to the mobile number and email ID associated with your pre-validated and EVC-enabled demat account. If you have not yet pre-validated your demat account, please refer to the user manual titled “My Demat Account” for instructions on how to pre-validate and enable EVC for your Demat account.
Step 2: Enter the EVC that you received on your mobile number and email ID, both of which should be registered with your demat account. Input the EVC in the designated “Enter EVC” textbox and proceed by clicking the “e-Verify” button.
If you use net banking for your regular money transactions, then online verification of the ITR is a matter of just a few easy and simple steps:
Step 1: Ensure that your Permanent Account Number (PAN) is linked to your bank account.
Step 2: Make sure that net banking is enabled for the bank account you wish to use.
Step 3: Choose the option to verify through net banking.
Step 4: Take a moment to read and comprehend the disclaimer. Once you understand it, proceed by clicking the “Continue” button.
Step 5: Log in to your net banking account using your user ID and password.
Step 6: Locate the link on your bank's website that allows you to log in to the e-filing portal. Click on the link to access the e-filing portal.
Step 7: After clicking the link, you will be redirected to the e-filing dashboard where you can complete the e-verification process.
Some taxpayers may still be more comfortable swiping their ATM cards in and out for details, which is why they have been given the option to verify their ITR forms online using this method.
Step 1: Visit your bank’s ATM and insert your ATM card.
Step 2: Enter your PIN and select the option “Generate EVC for Income tax Filing”.
Step 3: The EVC will be sent to your registered mobile number and email ID.
Step 4: Please be mindful that the e-verification process must be completed within the designated timeframe, which is presently set at 30 days from the date of filing the income tax return. Once you have successfully e-verified, a confirmation message will be sent to your registered email ID and mobile number.
By meticulously adhering to these steps, taxpayers can easily and securely meet the e-verification requirements for their ITR forms and other related submissions, thereby ensuring compliance with the tax authorities.
