In the coming year, the smartphone you buy will, in all likelihood, be better than this year’s phones. The push to make phones sleeker will continue, and we will get even better designs.
Processors will become more powerful. Qualcomm has already announced the Snapdragon 835 chip, which will power some of the premium Android smartphones heading our way over the next few months. The newer chips will also mean that phones will now have more powerful graphics, which will improve the gaming experience and enable high-resolution video editing.
It’s now clear that only two smartphone platforms remain relevant—Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. App developers will rally around them, but Google will continue to cajole smartphone makers to release OS updates for phones.
If the Pixel phones from Google are anything to go by, we truly do have benchmark phones for the Android ecosystem, and they’ll get even better in 2017. This will make things very interesting, because the iPhone is also expected to attempt a generational leap.
And there will be greater emphasis on software security in the face of increasing malware threats, particularly for enterprise users.
