CHENNAI :
Chennai’s Santhome will don the colours of Seoul on 16 August, with the Korean Bazaar being held at St Thomas High School as part of the Madras Day celebrations. This is the first time such an event is being organized by the Korean Association in the city, in cooperation with the consulate general of the Republic of Korea, set up six months ago.
Deputy consul general Jung Taek Lim points out several similarities between Indian and Korean culture. “Korean society is very family-oriented like that of India. Korean people respect elders and place big importance on the stability and order of the community. There is also similarity between the Korean and Tamil languages. More than 500 words have the same pronunciation and the same meaning. For example, Amma means mother and Appa means father in Korean, exactly the same as Tamil."
Who’s coming: The city has a 4,000-strong Korean community. Participants will include the Korean Protestant and Catholic churches, the Korean Language School, and the Korean Parents’ Association of the American International School.
Shop: There will be 30 stalls for products like clothing, stationery and jewellery.
Eat: Ten stalls will be allotted for food. The organizers expect bibimbap, rice mixed with vegetables, and topokki, stir-fried rice cakes, to be a hit with Indian visitors.
Watch: Visitors will be treated to performances by a percussion band that will play Samulnori, traditional Korean music. Eoulim, a Korean band, will play famous Korean compositions, while JB’s Inside Stuff, the regional winners of the K-Pop competition held last month, will present a dance performance.
The Korean Bazaar is on 16 August, 3-7pm, at St Thomas High School, Santhome, Chennai. For details, call T. Mathivanan at 9940392933, or email anjumathi.kor@gmail.com.
