IPL 8 runs tally isn’t setting the scoreboard alight
If it is the 200-plus mark that you are looking for, then the records made in 2008 remain unbeaten
NEW DELHI :
The eighth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which started on 8 April, has turned out to be the most unpredictable and exciting one so far in terms of runs scored. This season has seen 41 scores of over 170 runs so far compared to 37 in 2008, the inaugural season. But if it is the 200-plus mark that you are looking for, then the records made in 2008 remain unbeaten—11 teams made 200-plus scores, and 400-plus aggregate was made by five teams.
The graphic below shows that 2009 was the leanest season in terms of runs. One reason for this could be that the league was played in South Africa—there was only one score of over 200-plus, which Rajasthan Royals scored against Kings XI Punjab.
With just three matches remaining in the ongoing season, which ends on 24 May, there were seven contenders for the Orange cap (most runs scored) and five for purple cap (most wickets), at the time of going to press.
Statistics aside, this unpredictable season has most people guessing which team will play against Mumbai Indians at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens in the final on Sunday.
