CHENNAI :

The second edition of the IndiEarth Animation Film Festival, which starts today, will screen over 140 movies from India and other countries, including France, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Spain and Croatia. The films will showcase different styles of animation. The three-day festival will also include two workshops and interactions with industry experts.

“We received 300 submissions, out of which we decided to play as many quality films as possible. There are five feature-length films, including Sound Of Joy, the national award-winning film by Sukankan Roy," says festival manager Roy Dipankar.

Sound Of Joy, which won awards for Best Animation Film, Best Animator and Best Direction at the 62nd National Film Awards earlier this year, tells the story of Swami Vivekananda’s childhood. Supported by Ramakrishna Mission and the Union culture ministry, it is a 2D film made using Flash animation and backgrounds created on Adobe Photoshop.

Shadow puppetry, new media and stop-motion animation are among the other styles that will be showcased at the festival.

One of the films that will be shown is The Shower At The End Of The Day, by Idan Vardi, Assaf Benharroch and Lynn Polyak from Israel. The film, a combination of traditional 2D animation and 3D techniques, tells the story of what happens when a man turns on the tap after he steps into the shower. It shows the neighbourhood around him bursting into a riot of colour, trees sprouting from the ground, a woman playing a trumpet in the clouds, and a man transforming into Elvis Presley.

The workshops, which will be held on 27 and 28 June, will be conducted by film-maker Gitanjali Rao. The first session will focus on the making of True Love Story, her short film that won the Golden Conch Best Animation Film Award at the Mumbai International Film Festival in 2014 and was selected for Critics Week at the Cannes Festival the same year. This workshop is open only to students of animation and live-motion film-making. Rao will also have a Skype conversation with German film-maker Thomas Meyer-Hermann. True Love Story and Meyer-Hermann’s The Creation will be screened on 27 June.

Her second workshop, “What Makes Animation Indian?", which is open to all, will deal with clips and short films that are Indian in story, design and intent.

Festival director Sonya Mazumdar says India doesn’t have a quality international festival exclusively dedicated to animation. “We wanted to see this change... We’re finally seeing Indian films getting the recognition they deserve, and we want to provide a platform for both Indian and international film-makers."

The IndiEarth Animation Film Festival is on from 26-28 June, at Alliance Française, 24, College Road, Nungambakkam, and Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Rutland Gate, 5th Street. Timings vary. Workshop fee, 500 each. To register for the workshops, visit www.indiearth.com. For details, call 28279803/28331314 or email roy@indiearth.com.
