If you want an app with a simple design that is clutter-free and lets you do that one thing well, head to Dictadroid. It turns your Android device into a dictation machine. You can quietly let it work to record, take dictation and notes during a PowerPoint-heavy meeting. The app has the ability to record in the background or even while the screen is off. It automatically detects voice, gives you uninterrupted recording, and adds the date and time to the filename.

The Sound Recorder
Meant for Windows Phones, this app can record in both stereo and mono modes. You can set it to skip the silences while recording, pause and then resume and copy the files into either the media library of your phone or upload to SkyDrive. The app works even when the screen is locked and indicates what decibel level it’s recording on, so that the audio is clear. If your battery is running out, the app automatically saves the recording done till then, before the phone shuts down.

Parrot Voice Recorder Pro
BlackBerry 10 users can opt for the Parrot voice recorder to record audio. The app is designed to record audio tracks and allows you to stop, pause or restart. You can also copy, modify or share your tracks through BlackBerry Messenger, email, Bluetooth, near field communication (NFC) and more. You can insert notes, photographs, contacts and GPS locations into the app, while the recording is happening. The Pro version ($2.99) gives you the ability to record phone calls, add password protection for recordings to protect your track lists, and import tracks into the app to manage them.

Audio Memos
Are you most comfortable putting on a recording and forgetting about it while relaxing in a meeting? Use Audio Memos, an efficient recording app which records in the background when the phone is idle, or even when you are checking mail. When in recording mode, a red bar is visible across the top of your screen to tell you that it’s working. Tap it and you can pause or stop the recording. The basic version of the app lets you record and edit voice memos, upload on the iCloud or email recipients directly. In-app, additional, purchases can enable you to send pictures with an audio file, insert new audio into a recording, compress the file, encrypt it and give you other trimming options.

Want a clean interface in an app? Download ASR. The app has a big red button in the middle which starts a recording, a dedicated pause and discard button, echo cancellation, even voice-activated recording. You can integrate your audio files with Dropbox or Google Drive or automatically send an email of the recording to a designated ID. The app can also record in the background, or when the screen is off. The best feature is that it can auto-start recording at a given time, which means you can set it to record at your convenience, and automatically, when you are heading into a meeting. It works for Android 2.2 and updated versions of Android.

Interviewy
Meant for someone who wants to turn their iPhone into a Dictaphone for longer lectures and interviews, Interviewy lets you record with a simple swipe. A feature the app-makers call TypeTag enables you to press while the recording is happening to mark the important points in what is being said. Of course, you have to be active to do this. You can even press a marker on the screen for a duration to highlight the interview’s interesting bits.
All the recordings save automatically to the iCloud and can be retrieved from your phone, iPad, Mac or PC app. The only hitch is that currently you cannot download the recording—and will have to listen to it on the iCloud app only.
