Jaya Varma Sinha said that the goods train did not get derailed and only Coromandal Express met with an accident. 

According to the preliminary findings, there has been some issue with the signalling. We are still waiting for the detailed report from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Only Coromandal Express met with an accident. The train was at a speed of around 128 km/h, she said.

She further added, “The goods train did not get derailed. Since the goods train was carrying iron ores, the maximum damage of the impact was on Coromandel Express. This is the reason for a huge number of deaths and injuries. The derailed bogies of Coromandel Express came on the down line, and hit the last two bogies of Yashwantpur Express which was crossing at the speed of 126 km/h from down line"

Odisha train accident: PIL in SC seeking probe by expert panel

A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a probe into the triple train accident in Odisha's Balasore by an expert panel headed by a retired judge of the apex court.

The Balasore train accident where two passenger trains and a goods carriage were involved claimed 288 lives so far while over 1,000 people sustained injuries.

The PIL also sought guidelines and directions for the implementation of the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) System called KAVACH Protection System in Indian Railways with immediate effect to ensure public safety.

Odisha CM announces ₹5 lakh ex-gratia to family members of those killed in train accident

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday announced an ex-gratia of 5 lakh to the family members of those killed in the triple train accident at Bahanga Bazar near Balasore.

The assistance will be given from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

The next of kin of the deceased will get an assistance of 5 lakh and those who sustained serious injuries will get 1 lakh as assistance, a statement issued by the CMO said.

'Our family is devastated': 3 brothers lose lives in Odisha train accident

Three brothers from West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, who were travelling to Tamil Nadu in search of work, lost their lives in the train accident in Odisha's Balasore, officials told PTI.

Haran Gayen (40), Nishikant Gayen (35) and Dibakar Gayen (32), residents of Charanikhali village in Basanti Uttar, usually lived in the southern state most time of the year and did menial jobs there.

They came home a few days back, and were going back to Tamil Nadu this time in the Coromandel Express in search of work as farm labourers.

Haran's wife Anajita is a neurological patient, locals said, adding that her treatment was now in question. He is survived by two married daughters and a son who has recently started working at a local eatery. Besides his wife, Nishikant is survived by a daughter and a son, both minors. Dibakar is survived by two sons and his wife. "My father and uncles are no more, our family is devastated," said an inconsolable Avijit, the son of Haran.

100 bodies to be kept at AIIMS Bhubaneshwar, says DCP Singh

Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Geeta Singh informed that 100 out of the 160 unidentified bodies of passengers of the Odisha triple train accident will be kept in AIIMS Bhubaneshwar.

The DCP said the remaining bodies will be kept in the mortuaries of various hospitals and medical colleges in Bhubaneswar.

"Among the 288 passengers who died, 160 bodies have not been identified till now. Those identified have been sent to their respective addresses. But as there are no mortuary facilities in Balasore, 160 bodies will be kept in mortuaries in various hospitals and medical colleges in Bhubaneswar. A maximum of 100 bodies will be kept at AIIMS Bhubaneshwar. Others will be kept at KIMS, SUM, Hitech, Capital Hospital and SCB Medical College, Cuttack," DCP Singh said.

Special train from Balasore arrives in Chennai

A special train from Balasore carrying passengers affected by the horrific accident and derailment on Friday, arrived in Chennai in the wee hours of Sunday, informed officials.

Speaking at a press briefing, TN Health Minister Ma Subramanian said special medical arrangements have been made at all major government hospitals to provide medical help to the passengers.

He added, "Special arrangements have been made at all major government hospitals, with 305 doctors ready to provide medical help to the passengers. 207 ICUs and 250 beds have been arranged at six major government hospitals in Chennai. A medical team has been put together to examine the passengers at the airport as well."

NDRF says it pulled out 44 passengers alive, retrieved 112 bodies

As the nation mourned the loss of lives in the horrific triple train accident in Balasore, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said on Saturday that their personnel pulled out 44 passengers alive from the mangled coaches of the passenger trains and retrieved 112 bodies.

The NDRF added that its personnel were conducting a last round of search with the help of other agencies.

"After rescuing 44 live victims & retrieving 112 bodies till now, NDRF teams conducting Final Search with other agencies," tweeted NDRF.
