The police custody of Aaftab Poonawala, who is accused of killing his live-in partner at a rented flat in south Delhi's Mehrauli area, has been extended by five days. The Delhi court has also allowed the police application seeking permission for the Narco analysis test or a lie-detector test on Aaftab Poonawala for allegedly changing his statements since his arrest.

Aaftab Poonawala is accused of smothering his live-in partner, Shraddha Walkar, and later cutting her into 35 pieces, which he kept in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks, before dumping them away in nearby areas over the course of 18 days in May 2022.

According to the investigators, the narco test is necessary since Aaftab Poonawala is changing his statements and not cooperating in the probe. While allowing the application, the judge said, "I am aware of the sensitivity of the matter, media coverage...Public traction..." Blood samples of Shraddha Walkar's father were also collected for DNA analysis of the 13 body parts recovered so far.

Police said the couple used to have frequent arguments over financial issues and it is suspected that there was also a fight between them that resulted in Aaftab Poonawala killing 27-year-old Shraddha Walkar on the evening of 18 May.

As the Delhi court heard Aaftab Poonawala’s petition, a section of lawyers on Thursday evening at a court premises shouted slogans like "Shraddha ke hatyare ko fansi do, fansi do" (Shraddha's murderer should be hanged)" against Aaftab Amin Poonawala, accused in the Mehrauli killing case.

Around 100 advocates, practising at Saket district courts, assembled around 3 pm when they came to know that the accused will be produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Aviral Shukla.

They shouted slogans demanding the award of the death penalty for Poonawala, who is under police custody.
