Delhi: An Indian Foreign Services (IFS) officer committed suicide by jumping off a building in Chanakyapuri area, ANI quoted Delhi Police as saying. Preliminary investigation suspected no foul play. According to sources familiar with the matter, the officer was battling depression. He sustained grievous injuries after falling from fourth floor of the building.
IFS officer's mother used to stay with him on the first floor of the MEA Society, as per PTI report. The officer was reportedly undergoing treatment for depression. The deceased officer identified as Jitendra Rawat was around 40 years old who lived separately from his wife and children.
Jitendra Rawat was 2011 batch IFS officer, who had worked with Wipro before joining the government. He secured 621 rank in the 2010 UPSC exam. After joining the services, he worked in Brussels, Myanmar and counter terrorism, as per media reports.
Confirming the death, Delhi Police official said, “The deceased has been identified as Jitendra Rawat, aged 35 to 40 years. We have launched an investigation into the matter.”
Informing that Jitendra Rawat's wife and childern were staying in Dehradun, a source said, “Initial probe suggested that his wife and children are staying in Dehradun. He was staying on the first floor and went to the fourth floor and jumped,” PTI reported.
Following the report of this harrowing incident, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed condolences over the happenings and issued a statement. The statement reads, “An officer of the Ministry of External Affairs passed away in the morning of March 07, 2025, in New Delhi. The Ministry is providing all possible assistance to the family and is in touch with the Delhi Police.”
The MEA statement added, “The Ministry stands with the family in this hour of grief and difficulty. Further details are not being released bearing in mind the need to respect the family’s privacy in this time of bereavement.”
The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) is a diplomatic service and a central civil service of Indian Government that falls under the Ministry of External Affairs. Notably, IFS officers work in embassies, consulates, and high commissions in other countries and participate in international conferences and meetings.
