Delhi pollution: The Central government's panel on Delhi-NCR's air quality, Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), has reimposed stricter curbs in the national capital and its surrounding areas as the air quality continues to deteriorate. GRAP Stage 4 curbs have been imposed in Delhi and NCR area owing to dense foggy conditions.
The committee on Delhi pollution has decided to “invoke ALL actions under Stage-III ('Severe Air Quality of Delhi) and also Stage-IV ('Severe+' Air Quality of Delhi) of extant Schedule of GRAP, with immediate effect in addition to the Stage-I and II actions already in force” in an effort to prevent further deterioration of air.
The committee said it further analysed the air quality in Delhi and found it has deteriorated owing to a sharp increase in the pollutant levels and is likely to breach the 400-mark. Also Read | Delhi, neighbouring states to draft 3-year plan to tackle road dust pollution
“All actions of the GRAP schedule shall be implemented, monitored and reviewed by all the agencies concerned in the entire NCR to ensure that the AQI levels do not slip further,” the CAQM said in a statement.
1. Entry of trucks, except those carrying essential commodities, shall be banned into Delhi.
2. Physical classes for students for Class 1-12 shall be banned, the relevant authorities shall take a decision on this.
3. The classes may be shifted to online mode.
4. The state goverments shall take a decision on permitting 50 per cent of its workforce to work from home.
5. All LNG/CNG /Electric/BS-VI Diesel trucks shall, however, be permitted to enter Delhi.
6. Light Commercial Vehicles from outside Delhi, except EVs, CNG, and BS-VI diesel vehicles, are not allowed to enter the city unless they are carrying essential goods or providing essential services.
A few days ago, on January 12, the CAQM had revoked Stage-III measures as air quality in Delhi improved following rainfall in the region. According to an official order, owing to a WD (Western Disturbance) on January 11-12, there were rains around Delhi-NCR and the AQI of Delhi has shown a significant improvement owing to the favourable meteorological conditions.
The imposition or revocation of the curbs in Delhi-NCR aligns with the Supreme Court's directive issued in December 2024, mandating immediate escalation of GRAP measures if the air quality index (AQI) surpasses critical thresholds.
