Earthquake Today: An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 struck Pakistan on 5 December 2024 at 11:51:25 IST, with a depth of 109 km, located at latitude 32.69°N and longitude 73.54°E. According to the map, the epicentre was between Lahore and Islamabad.
According to Islamabad's National Seismic Monitoring Centre, a 5.1 magnitude of earthquake struck Kharian. The depth of the the quake was 15 km and the tremors were felt as far away as Jhelumm, Wazirabad, Nankana Sahab and Sarai Alamgir.
As per local media reports, there was no loss of lives and property in the region due to earthquake.
Pakistan and border areas in Jammu and Kashmir are located in a geologically active region. This is the reason why there have been frequent instances of earthquakes in recent years.
The primary reason lies in its position at the boundary of two major tectonic plates: the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. This boundary is part of the broader Himalayan seismic zone, one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
As the tectonic activity results in significant stress accumulation along the fault lines, particularly the Main Himalayan Thrust and related faults. Earthquakes occur when the stress exceeds the strength of rocks in these zones and is later released as seismic energy.
Several north Indian states are highly prone to earthquakes due to their proximity to tectonic plate boundaries and active fault lines. These regions lie primarily within the Himalayan seismic belt, one of the most active earthquake zones in the world.
Key earthquake-prone states in India are located in the Himalayan region. Other areas which are prone to earthquake are Delhi-NCR, Punjab and Haryana, northern parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, etc.
These earthquakes occur as the Indian Plate is moving northward and colliding with the Eurasian Plate at a rate of about 5 cm per year. The collision generates immense tectonic stress causing frequent quakes.
