Three peope died after consuming an intoxicating drink called ‘jeera’ from a bottle in Nadiad city of Gujarat's Kheda district, reported PTI citing police on Monday. The drink was suspected to be poisonous as the men fell ill immediately after its intake.
All of them started feeling giddy and were rushed to hospital for treatment on Sunday evening but they were declared dead, said Deputy Superintendent of Police VR Bajpai.
"Between 6.30 and 7 pm, the three persons started feeling giddy and were rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead at around 8 pm. Prima facie, it was learnt that their health deteriorated after they consumed an intoxicating liquid from a bottle," he said.
It is worth noting, that Gujarat is a dry state, hence sale and consumption of alcohol is completely ban in the state.
The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem and the blood samples were sent for a forensic analysis.
In a similar incident, several people died after they consumed an ayurvedic syrup. The liquod contained methyl alcohol and they had purchased it from a grocery shop, near Nadiad in Kheda district. People consume such drinks for intoxication in Gujarat, where liquor is banned.
In 2022, over 42 people died after consuming spurious liquor in Gujarat's Botad district. Taking cognisance of the matter, the Gujarat government had ordered an inquiry into the matter. The police had filed a charge sheet in the case to investigate the matter.
The incident came to light after natives of Rojit village of Botad were admitted to hospital after they complained of diziness. Most of them had consumed intoxicating drink.
According to an NDTV report, the initial investigation revealed that some people of the village had made spurious liquor by mixing water with methyl alcohol or Methanol. The highly poisonous industrial solvent then soled to villagers for ₹20 per pouch.
