Home / News / How did Queen Elizabeth die? Her death certificate says this

Queen Elizabeth’s death certificate was released on Thursday by the National Records of Scotland. According to her death certificate, Queen Elizabeth II died of "old age" on 8 September. The certificate records her time of death as 3.10 pm (1410 GMT).

The 96-year-old monarch died at her Balmoral estate in Scotland around three-and-a-half hours before the news was announced to the world.

Hours before the Queen died, the Buckingham Palace released a statement, saying that the doctors were concerned about the Queen's health. The statement mentioned that Queen Elizabeth would remain under medical supervision.

Queen Elizabeth's death was officially announced at 6.30 pm. While the cause of Queen Elizabeth's death wasn't publically announced at that time, her death certificate mentioned that she died due to her old age.

She had carried out her last official duty, appointing Liz Truss as prime minister, just two days earlier.

Queen Elizabeth, who spent 70 years on the throne, had been suffering from what Buckingham Palace had called "episodic mobility problems" since the end of last year, forcing her to withdraw from nearly all her public engagements.

The certificate shows her death was registered by her daughter, Princess Anne, on 16 September. The regime had held an 11-day mourning period for the late queen.

Meanwhile, hundreds queued at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, the final resting place of Queen Elizabeth II in south-east England, as it reopened to the public for visits for the first time since her death earlier this month.

“Windsor Castle will reopen to visitors on Thursday, 29 September. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II we will not be reopening the Platinum Jubilee display," said the Royal Collection Trust, which runs the royal palaces.

On 19 September, Queen Elizabeth II was laid to rest in the George VI Memorial Chapel. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh’s coffin was then moved from the chapel’s Royal Vault and placed in the same enclave. George VI Memorial Chapel also houses the coffins of the Queen’s parents, father George and mother Elizabeth.
