The Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant located in Nova Kakhovka, currently under Russian control has been destroyed. The dam is one of six that were built in the Soviet era and is big enough to hide the other bank from sight from certain places. According to Reuters, the dam holds water equal to the Great Salt Lake in the United States. (twitter )

There has been a massive breach in the dam and water has surged through, flooding downstream in the direction of Kherson. It has been predicted to destroy settlements in a critical zone, home to around 16,000 people. (twitter)

Buildings and streets have been surrounded by floodwaters. Residents have been advised to evacuate and seek shelter on higher ground. It has been reported that eight villages have been completely flooded already. (twitter)

The dam serves a number of purposes. It holds up a reservoir that supplies water to communities upstream. Farmers rely on the water to grow crops and it also provides cooling water to the nuclear power station at Zaporizhzhia. (twitter )

Although it is not yet clear as to what caused the breach, the Ukrainian military and Nato have accused Russia of being responsible while Russia is pointing the finger at Ukraine. (twitter )
