Coronavirus update: First casualty from Tamil Nadu, death toll in India rises to 11

    Tamil Nadu today recorded its first death due to novel coronavirus infection today after a 54-year-old man passed away in Madurai. With this new case, the death toll in India has climbed to 11.

    The patient were admitted to the Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. He had a medical histrory of prolonged illness with "uncontrolled diabetes", confirmed state Health Minister C Vijayabaskar.

    "Despite our best efforts, the COVID-19 positive patient at MDU, Rajaji Hospital, passed away... he had medical history of prolonged illness with steroid dependent COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), uncontrolled diabetes with hypertension," the health minister tweeted.

    Coronavirus patients with co-morbidity conditions like uncontrollable diabetes and hypertension, immunosuppression are at high risk, C Vijayabaskar told earlier.

    Six fresh cases were reported from Chennai on Tuesday. Five of them had a history of travelling to foreign countries. A One local person with no travel history was also infected by COVID-19 disease. A 65-year-old man, who had recently returned from New Zealand, tested positive for the coronavirus in Chennai. Patients were admitted to hospitals and the treatment had started, said the state health minister.


    A total of 18 coronavirus cases have been diagnosed in Tamil Nadu so far. One person has been recovered, according to the latest data release by Ministry of Family and Welfare.

    As the number of coronavirus patients are rising by the day, Tamil Nadu went under the lockdown on Tuesday evening. To prevent the public gathering, prohibitory orders were imposed across the state. The borders were closed for inter-state traffic. Tamil Nadu chief minister K. Palaniswami allotted 3,280 crore considering the crisis in the state amid coronavirus lockdown. Free supplies of ration and several other welfare schemes were announced in the state to benefit the common man.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a 21-day nation-wide lock down as the coronavirus cases reached over 500 in the country.
