‘200 units of free power for all domestic consumers, including renters,’ says Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

As per the government's directive, the beneficiaries will receive free electricity up to 10 per cent more than their average power consumption in the 2022-23 financial year.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday announced that 200 units of free power will be made available to all domestic consumers in the state, including those residing in rented accommodations.

As reported by ANI, Karnataka CM said, “200 units of free power will be provided to all domestic consumers including to those living in rented accommodations in the state."

After assuming power in Karnataka, the Congress party has declared its plan to offer 200 units of complimentary electricity (Gruha Jyoti) to every household in the state.

On Monday, the Karnataka government introduced the 'Gruha Jyoti' program, fulfilling one of the five electoral pledges made by the ruling Congress party. Scheduled to be implemented from July 1, the scheme guarantees up to 200 units of complimentary electricity for domestic consumers.

However, it should be noted that the scheme applies exclusively to residential usage and does not extend to commercial connections.

As per the government's directive, the beneficiaries will receive free electricity up to 10 per cent more than their average power consumption in the 2022-23 financial year.

He said, "We are offering free electricity to help the poor and middle-class people of the State who are in distress. We have allowed 10% more free electricity consumption than the average consumption in a year. This has been accepted and welcomed by the people of the State."

As per the government's order, if a consumer uses about 150 units of electricity a month on an average, he can get free power up to 165 units of power. However, if the usage exceeds 200 units of power, the consumer will have to pay the full amount of the electricity bill. Consumers have to pay the arrears by June 30 within three months.

The electricity meter usage and the meter reading have been made mandatory. The total electricity consumption will be displayed in the monthly bill, the order said.

The government also mentioned that the beneficiaries of ‘Bhagya Jyoti’, ‘Kuteera Jyoti’ and ‘Amruta Jyoti’ schemes, which are various existing schemes offering free electricity to the economically and socially backward communities, will be merged with the 'Gruha Jyoti' scheme.
