HYDERABAD : The number of coronavirus (covid-19) cases in Telangana have shot up with 75 new positive cases, the highest in one day till now, being reported on Friday. With this, the total number of cases stand at 229. Two more covid-19 deaths are also reported on the same day, taking the total number of people who had died after suffering from the novel virus to 11 in the state.

According to a media bulletin from the state government, 15 patients who were undergoing treatment for covid-19 were also discharged on Friday, with the total number of discharged patients now being 32. Currently, there are 186 active positive cases in hospitals in Telangana. As a step to tackle the pandemic, the state government has also turned the public Gandhi hospital into a covid-19 only treatment centre.

Most of the cases reported on Friday are linked the religious congregation that was held at the Markaz Nizamuddin in New Delhi last month (which was attended by thousands of Muslims), held by the Tablighi Jamat sect of Sunni Islam. Ten Indonesian nationals had travelled to the state from the national capital after that, which increased the number of cases exponentially in the state. Most of the cases found over the last week are of people who attended the meeting, or are of people who came into contact with the attendees.

The situation is similar in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh, where 12 new cases were reported on Friday, taking the total to 161. Of the total tally, 140 of them are linked to the Markaz Nizamuddin. AP also reported its first death after a 55-year-old died of covid-19 on Friday. Shaikh Subhani, the deceased, had gone to the Vijayawada General hospital on 30 March at 11:30 a.m., and passed away after an hour.

His samples tested positive for covid-19, after which it was concluded that he died due to the virus. According to a media bulletin from the AP government, Subhani’s son had back to Vijayawada from New Delhi (mostly after attending the religions congregation at the Markaz Nizamuddin) on 17 March and on 31 March he had tested positive for covid-19. It is likely that Subhani was infected with the virus by his son.

They belong to Kummaripalem in Vijayawada district and 29 contacts of the father-son duo have been identified and quarantined. The Andhra Pradesh government has also informed the Centre of the flight details in which Subhani came to AP. “All precautions have been taken as per covid-19 protocol. Though Subhani had other health problems, so initially it was difficult to know whether he died due to those or covid-19. But now it has been ascertained that he died of the virus," said the bulletin from the state government.

So far, the AP government has also identified 1085 people who are from and are linked to the Tablighi Jamat members. A statement from the AP government said that 613 people who were tested for covid-19 are people who attended the congregation, while others are their family members and contacts.

Both AP and Telangana had imposed a lockdown from 23 March itself after covid-19 cases began surfacing. Last month, both states announced pay cuts in salaries of government employees and elected representatives. In Andhra Pradesh, the state government earlier this week passed an order deferring 100% payment of salaries of Jagan Mohan Reddy, the state’s MLAs, MLCs and all elected members of local bodies (and people holding equivalent positions and members of all state corporations).

In Telangana, anticipating a tough economic climate ahead, chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao had announced on 30 March a salary-cut of 75% for himself, the state’s MLAs, MLCs, state corporation chairpersons and representatives of other local bodies. He however has said that it won’t apply to doctors and police officers (working for the state), and that they will also receive incentives for their service.

The salaries of IAS/IPS/IFS officers in both states will also be deferred by 60%, while all the government employees (except class-4 employees), will have their salaries slashed by 50% in the state.
