NEW DELHI : The Union home ministry is now considering a ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) for allegedly instigating students and other groups for stoking violence, even as protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act continue to rage across the country.

The Uttar Pradesh administration had urged the Centre to take action against the organization as large swathes of the state, including Muzaffarnagar and Rampur, remained tense after clashes between police and protesters led to the death of 20 people, according to official figures.

As many as 25 people affiliated to the PFI “have been arrested across the state for their involvement in different criminal activities", inspector general, law and order, Uttar Pradesh, Praveen Kumar, said on Wednesday. Kumar’s statement follows that of UP director general of police O.P. Singh’s comment on Tuesday on the organization’s alleged involvement in the violence.

“PFI’s role in the violence is coming to the fore. The home ministry will decide on further action based on evidence. There are many allegations against them, including a connection with the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI)," Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Wednesday.

PFI has been under the home ministry’s scanner for months for alleged “outlawed activities", a senior central government official said on condition of anonymity.

Intelligence inputs have, in the past, indicated that the group is an offshoot of SIMI, which was designated a terrorist organization and subsequently banned in 2001.

The proposal to ban PFI, which allegedly operates out of Kerala, has been in the works after the alleged involvement of some of its members in political killings in the state, besides alleged link to religious conversions and terror activities.
