AIIMS Delhi partners with WHO, Duke-NUS on patient safety and quality control

According to WHO, the current challenge in global public health is patient harm, which is a leading cause of avoidable mortality and morbidity.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) has collaborated with World Health Organization (WHO-SEARO) to ensure patient safety and quality control. According to WHO, the current challenge in global public health is patient harm, which is a leading cause of avoidable mortality and morbidity.

In this regard, a core committee for Patient Safety and Quality at AIlMS is being constituted for implementation of advanced patient safety and quality initiatives across various departments. AIIMS will follow the learning curriculum proposed by WHO in collaboration with the Duke-NUS (Institute of Patient Safety &Quality -IPSQ).

“AIIMS Director held a meeting with WHO and SEARO representatives to undertake patient safety and quality measures at the institute. Patient harm as one of the key global public health concerns which not just causes loss of healthy years of life, but also adversely impacts the financial, social, and psychological well-being of patients. The plan is to start patient safety and quality control measures with the Department of pediatrics including neo-natalogy and paediatric Surgery including Neonatal Surgery," said an AIIMS official adding.

“WHO has also proposed collaboration with Duke-NUS (Institute of Patient Safety & Quality - IPSQ) which will help in fostering a high-caliber platform for leaders in patient safety and healthcare quality across Asia Pacific region through cross sharing of healthcare practices and improvement journeys. To facilitate this transformation, Patient Safety Secretariat will be created with the Department of Hospital Administration at AIIMS, New Delhi aimed at implementing the initiatives across the institute and eventually becoming a WHO Collaborating Center on patient safety.

The WHO will organize onsite visits of experts or study tour of AIIMS staff as and when required.

“The curriculum comprises of four key components such as—sharing best practices by invited experts who are patient safety leads from various countries, visit to Singapore hospitals and facilities for cross sharing of healthcare practices, patient safety and QI workshops to identify areas of improvement etc. For this, we have constituted a core committee for the same will coordinate between the WHO and the institute," added the official.

AIIMS sees footfall of more than 25,000 patients every day for wide range of medical ailments will get from the aid from this new initiative.
