IMD says cyclone Biparjoy to intensify in next 48 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that cyclone Biparjoy will intensify further in the next 48 hours and will move north-northwestwards in the coming two days. The weather office provided the information on its official Twitter handle.

“VSCS BIPARJOY lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, near latitude 14.7N and longitude 66.2E, about 820 km west of Goa, 840 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 850 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 1140 km south of Karachi. To intensify further during next 48 hours.," IMD tweeted.

The very severe cyclonic storm was located over the east-central Arabian Sea located 840-kilometer west-southwest of Goa and 870 km west-southwest of Mumbai at 11:30 pm on June 8, the weather forecasting agency said.

The weather department has also advised fishermen not to venture into such cyclone-hit areas in the Arabian Sea.

The Cyclone 'Biparjoy' got its name as suggested by Bangladesh. In Bengali, the word 'Biparjoy' holds the meaning of 'disaster' or ‘calamity’. The process of naming cyclones follows a rotational system among countries, adhering to specific guidelines that have been established.

The IMD has not yet predicted any major impact on countries adjoining the Arabian Sea, including India, Oman, Iran and Pakistan.

However, high-speed winds will affect weather in the Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coasts till June 10. Gale wind can reach a speed of 145-155 kmph gusting to 170 kmph over the central Arabian Sea.

The weather office stated that the most affected areas by the storm are expected to be the adjoining regions of the west-central and south Arabian Sea. Apart from this, coasts of north Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa is expected to be affected.

It has predicted heavy rainfall over Andaman & Nicobar Island, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka, Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh for the next three to four days.

The city of Mumbai is expected to witness strong winds and high waves along its coast and scattered rains are expected all over Maharashtra with Mumbai and Pune likely to receive some intense rainfall from 8 to 10 June.
