Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait, who held a farmers' protest at Delhi borders against three farm acts, has warned the Central government if no action is taken against the wrestling body chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment complaints. Issuing an ultimatum, Rakesh Tikait said that if Brij Bhushan is not arrested by June 9, he will hold a larger protest along with the wrestlers.
“We have taken a decision that the government must address the grievances of wrestlers and he [Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh] should be arrested otherwise we will go with wrestlers to Jantar Mantar, Delhi on June 9 and will hold panchayats across the nation," farmer leader Rakesh Tikait said after a meeting in support of the protesting wrestlers.
In another warning to the Central government, Rakesh Tikait said that if they aren't allowed to protest at Jantar Mantar on June 9, “there will be an announcement of andolan [agitation]".
‘CENTRE HAS TIME TILL JUNE 9’
Rakesh Tikait said the Central government has time only till June 9. The farmer leader also said that cases against the wrestlers, who were manhandled and detained on May 28 during their march towards the new Parliament building, should be withdrawn.
“[The] Central government has time till June 9. We will not compromise on anything less than the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. If this does not happen, we will go to Jantar Mantar on June 9 and hold panchayats across the nation. Cases against wrestlers should be withdrawn and the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh must happen," Rakesh Tikait said.
Meanwhile, India's 1983 World Cup champions have urged the protesting wrestlers not to take any hasty decision regarding their medals while hoping that players' issues will be “heard and resolved". The team also said it was “distressed and disturbed" at the manhandling of the wrestlers.
On May 28, the Delhi Police had allegedly manhandled and detained the wrestlers when they marched towards the new Parliament building on its inauguration day.
