The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to interfere in his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in the liquor policy scam case. AAP supremo is likely to be produced in front of the court on Thursday, March 28. Since Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been arrested, AAP leaders have been staging protests in the national capital accusing ED?s action to be politically motivated. In a press statement, Arvind Kejriwal?s wife, Sunita Kejriwal raised questions about the whereabouts of the money from the ?so-called? liquor policy scam.
Aam Aadmi Party National Convener Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21, in connection with the now-scrapped Delhi Liquor Policy case. A day after his arrest, the trial court remanded Arvind Kejriwal to ED custody until March 28.
Later, CM Arvind Kejriwal moved the Delhi High Court challenging ED arrest and remand in the excise policy case. He also requested for urgent hearing of the petition, which was turned down by the HC. The Aam Aadmi Party suffered a major setback after its parliamentarian from Jalandhar, Sushil Kumar Rinku and Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural joined the BJP on Wednesday. Delhi Education Minister Atishi said, "We are fighting against the illegal arrest of Kejriwal. His arrest is not just an attack on the AAP but an attack on the democracy of the country. After announcing elections, you (BJP) systematically put all opposition leaders in jail."
Further questioning the BJP-ruled Centre, she said"You froze opposition parties' bank accounts. You seized the offices of other parties. If you attack the opposition in this way, how will the opposition contest elections? If the opposition cannot contest elections, how will democracy survive in this country?"
Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said, "The chief minister should resign from his post. There are almost a dozen allegations of corruption against him. If the excise policy was world-class, why did he take it back? We are demanding Kejriwal's resignation."
A spokesperson of the German Foreign Ministry said, ?We have taken note, that India is a democratic country. We assume and expect that the standards relating to independence of Judiciary and basic democratic principles will also be applied in this case."
He added, "Like anyone facing accusations, Mr Kejriwal is entitled to a fair and impartial trial, this includes he can make use of all available legal avenues without restrictions. The presumption of innocence is a central element of the rule of law and must apply to him.?
The Ministry of External Affairs defending India's legal system, in a statement today said, "In diplomacy, states are expected to be respectful of the sovereignty and internal affairs of others. This responsibility is even more so in the case of fellow democracies. It could otherwise end up setting unhealthy precedents."
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said, "We continue to follow these actions closely, including the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. We are also aware of the Congress party's allegations that tax authorities have frozen some of their bank accounts in a manner that will make it challenging to effectively campaign in the upcoming elections." These comments came in the wake of Delhi CM Kejriwal's arrest and freezing of Congress party's bank accounts.
