SBI, HDFC, ICICI, PNB and other banks across India remained closed on Sunday. This was because 23 August fell on a weekend. Consequently, physical branch banking services stayed suspended nationwide.

According to the RBI's holiday calendar, banks are closed every Sunday. They are also closed on the 2nd and 4th Saturday every month.

Bank Holiday August (This Week)

The RBI calendar shows three regional bank holidays occurring between 24 and 30 August. Physical branches will remain closed for up to four days this week. However, banks will operate normally on all other business days.

This coming Saturday, 29 August, banks will actually stay open. That's because it falls on the 5th Saturday of the month. Banks will function for roughly 3-4 days this week.

On 25 August, Tuesday, banks in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh will remain closed. This closure marks Milad-Un-Nabi and the first Onam celebration.

On 26 August, Wednesday, several states will observe bank holidays. These include Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand. Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala follow suit. That’s because Milad-un-Nabi will be observed on this day in these states.

Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand will also observe this closure. The festival is also called Baravafat or Milad-un-Nabi. Kerala also celebrates Thiruvonam on this same day. So, it’s another bank holiday in Kerala.

Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh join this list. This closure marks the nationwide celebration of Raksha Bandhan. Banks will then remain closed on 30 August, a Sunday.

Bank Holiday September

Looking ahead, September brings numerous regional holidays across various Indian cities. Most cities observe a common holiday on 4 September because of Krishna Janmashtami.

This includes Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Chandigarh. Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad and Jaipur also observe this closure. Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata and Lucknow follow suit. Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar and more are joining too.

Another cluster of holidays falls on 14 September in several states because of Ganesh Chaturthi. Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji and Vijayawada will close. Chennai and Hyderabad also observe holidays around this same date. On 15 September, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and Panaji will see further closures because of Samvatsari, Nuakhai and Ganesh Chaturthi visarjan celebrations, respectively.

Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram similarly close branches on 21 September for Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi. Jammu and Srinagar will mark a holiday on 23 September for the Maharaja Hari Singh Ji Jayanti.

Ranchi will have a bank holiday on 22 & 23 September because of Karam Puja. Gangtok observes Indra Jatra on 25 September. So it’ll be a holiday.

Cities like Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima and New Delhi show no listed holidays this September. Customers should check regional schedules carefully before visiting physical branches. Digital banking services, however, typically remain unaffected during these regional holidays.
