Bengaluru-based software engineer tests positive for COVID-19

    BENGALURU : The Karnataka government on Monday said that one person in the state had tested positive for COVID-19, taking the national toll to 44.

    A software engineer, 40, with a recent travel history to US has tested positive, Dr Sudhakar, Karnataka's medical education minister said.

    The software engineer had travelled from Austin, Texas on 28 February through New York and then to Dubai, before landing in Bengaluru on 1 March. His wife and daughter are currently lodged in a health facility in the city.

    One of his colleagues has also been admitted to the the hospital for displaying similar symptoms.

    The driver and three members of his family are in isolation home. The government said that it has collected information of 2,666 possible primary and secondary contacts who may have come in contact with the patient.

    The confirmation adding Karnataka to a list of other states including Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Delhi among other places that have reported positive cases.

    The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has surpassed 100,000 globally, according to a 7 March statement by World Health Organisation (WHO).

    The Karnataka government has decided to order an indefinite closure of pre-primary and kindergarten sections in schools across Bengaluru as a precaution to contain the spread of COVID-19 or novel coronavirus. Sudhakar said that classes till fifth standard in Bengaluru urban and rural will remain closed till further orders.

    On Monday, several schools sent back students while some of them decided to continue as planned to help working parents who may not be able to make last minute arrangements to take care of their children.

    In an internal email written on 9 March, Shanthi Menon, school principal at Deens Academy in Bengaluru, said that there was confirmation that one parent residing at a private apartment (name withheld) had self confirmed that he “screened positive" for COVID-19. “He has himself mailed me and also informed that his family will be on quarantine," the email, that was purportedly sent by the school principal to the academy’s teacher, reads.

    She added that education department officials had been informed and that they would visit the school to carry out further inspections. The school could not be reached for comment.

    Karnataka state has strengthened all surveillance and containment measures against the possible spread of disease. Till date, cumulatively 982 persons have been identified for observation. Of them 266 persons have completed 28 days of observation and 700 persons are continuing home quarantine, the government said in a statement . These include persons who have travelled to COVID-19 affected countries and contacts of COVID-19 positive cases. As of today, 12 persons are admitted in selected isolation hospitals. Till date 432 samples of symptomatic persons are sent for testing and 364 samples are reported as negative and remaining 68 samples results awaited.

    Till date 91,911 passengers have been screened in Karnataka including 61,585 passengers in Bengaluru and 25,003 passengers in Mangaluru.

    Additionally, 5,323 passengers have been screened at Mangalore and Karwar seaports.
