The Union Budget 202 has finally brought a cheer among the residents of Bengaluru after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced of ₹18600 crore for the development of Bengaluru rail suburban transport project.
The metro city will be getting a 148 km long suburban rail transport network and it will have the fares based on the metro model. The central government would provide 20% of equity and facilitate external assistance up to 60% of the project cost.
Bengaluru will become the latest city to have its own suburban rail network after other major metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Secunderabad. The state government has submitted a revised detailed project report (DPR) that proposes around 55-odd suburban railway stations.
Thanking Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Karnataka CM BS Yeddiyurappa hailed her decision to approve Bengaluru suburban rail whose funding up to 40% will be shared by the state and the Centre, with the balance coming from external assistance.
"This will boost the infrastructure facilities in Bengaluru which has turned out to be favourite investment destination for the MNCs. This will help us to eliminate traffic congestion in this investment friendly city," said Yeddiyurappa.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said that money will be provided for the suburban railway project in the state Budget and it is expected to be completed in three years.
The trains with all air-conditioned coaches will operate from 5 am till midnight and will benefit lakhs of commuters travelling within Bengaluru and surrounding areas, the chief minister added.
Speaking to ANI on the suburban railway project, the Chief Minister said, "We are going to provide money in the Budget. We want to complete it in three years. We will start work as early as possible."
The state government has proposed to execute the work through the Rail lnfrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Ltd (K-RIDE) and a special purpose vehicle has to be formed to implement the project, stated a PTI report.
The RITES submitted a pre-feasibility report in November 2017 titled as "Bengaluru Elevated Rail Corridor - Pre-Feasibility Report". The report studied three options to explore alternative means of enhancing commuter rail capacity of Bengaluru City with minimum land acquisition.
According to media reports, RITES(Rail India Technical and Economic Service) have prepared a detailed project report(DPR) which it submitted to Indian Railways.
RITES have identified four corridors and they are: KSR Bengaluru city–Devanahalli, Chikkabanavara–Yeshwantpur–Byappanahalli, Heelalige -Yelahanka–Rajanukunte and Kengeri–KSR Bengaluru–White field.
According to a latest report, Bengaluru is the world’s most traffic congested city and the introduction of the suburban rail network will help in providing the residents an alternative to reach their destinations on time
“Bengaluru takes the top spot this year with drivers in the southern Indian city expecting to spend an average of 71% extra travel time stuck in traffic," TomTom said in the ninth edition of its annual Traffic Index.
