Bengaluru police heightens security measures after Sri Lanka blasts

Bengaluru police commissioner clarifies that there was no alert or threat to Bengaluru and the steps taken were only a precaution

    BENGALURU : T. Suneel Kumar, the Bengaluru city police commissioner on Thursday held a meeting with religious heads, mall and hotel operators, among others to brief them about safety measures that have to be in place as a precaution, after the bomb blasts in Sri Lanka, that killed hundreds of people.

    “We have had an interaction with heads of religious institutions, hotels, malls and other places where there is large footfalls and mandatorily install CCTVs and have physical checks or frisking," Kumar said in Bengaluru on Thursday.

    The meeting was attended by several shop owners and religious heads where they were briefed about security measures in general.

    The commissioner, however, clarified that there was no alert or threat to Bengaluru and the steps taken were only a precaution.

    The serial blasts in the island nation of Sri Lanka heightening security levels across major urban centres globally including India, that has been targeted by terrorist elements in the past.

    The blasts, in which terrorists targeted churches and luxury hotels that was frequented by foreigners on Easter Sunday, has claimed the lives of around 359 people and injured around 500 more.

    A total of 10 Indians are confirmed dead so far, of which eight are from Karnataka.

    The bombings have also led to Muslims fleeing the Sri Lankan port city of Negombo in the fear of a backlash after reports that radical Islamic groups claimed responsibility for the attacks, Guardian reported.

    Kumar said that many of the steps like CCTVs and frisking should become a permanent feature across places that see high footfalls to help law enforcement agencies.
