Netizens have been left fuming after actor Kajol deleted all her social media posts and announced that she was ‘facing one of the toughest trials’ of her life - only for it to be revealed as a promotional gimmick. The hashtag ‘ShameOnKajolHotstar’ trended on Twitter on Saturday afternoon as outraged fans berated the star for ‘crying wolf’ and persuading them that something was really wrong.
“The tougher the trial, the harder you come back! Catch the trailer for my courtroom drama,” read a later post by Disney Hotstar that was also shared by the actor.
'The Trial' is an Indian adaptation of hit American courtroom drama 'The Good Wife' starring Julianna Margulies in the lead role. It began airing in 2009. The show ran for seven seasons and wound up in 2016.
The initial announcement had sparked a flurry of concerned messages from fans, with many sending ‘prayers and love’ to the actor.
“I hope that the break does you great good and I wish you the very best as you navigate the tough parts of life. Prayers and love,” wrote one social media user.
“You are strong enough to face any problem. Soon you will overcome,” assured another.
The reception was markedly colder after the revelation with many fans lambasting the ‘publicity stunt’ and accusing the actor of ‘playing with the emotions of those who genuinely care for her’.
“Shame on you for playing such a cheap stunt with your fans! We trusted and supported you, but this is a betrayal,” berated one Twitter user.
“As a longtime fan of Kajol, I feel betrayed and disappointed. Using cheap tricks as a publicity stunt is unforgivable. #ShameOnKajolHotstar” wrote another.
Kajol will essay the role of a housewife, who goes back to working as a lawyer after her husband's scandal lands him in jail. Directed by Supan Verma, it will stream on Disney Hotstar.
