Bypoll Results 2023 LIVE: The counting of votes for the seven assembly seats across six states that went to bypoll on Tuesday last, began at 8.00 am at centres set up in the respective states on Friday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured victory in the by-elections for both the Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly seats in Tripura's Sepahijala district, as confirmed by the Election Commission (EC). Further TMC also won the Dhupguri seat defeating BJP.
Opposition UDF candidate Chandy Oommen secured a victory from the Puthuppally assembly bypoll here on Friday. Son of late Congress stalwart Oommen Chandy, he has been far ahead of his nearest co-contestants, PTI reported.
The bypoll results are seen as a test for the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA ahead of the five state assembly elections scheduled later this year and the crucial Lok Sabha polls in 2024.
The seven seats include Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Puthuppally in Kerala, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, and Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura. Check all the latest updates with LiveMint.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday congratulated the opposition INDIA bloc parties for winning four seats out of seven in the assembly bypolls, calling it "not an easy feat".
"Congratulations to the INDIA alliance @INCIndia (Congress), @HemantSorenJMM (Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren), @AITCofficial (Trinamool Congress) and @samajwadiparty (Samajwadi Party) for their spectacular wins against divisive forces," she said in a post on X.
"Not an easy feat given the combined might of the central government and its agencies," Mehbooba added.
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader also used the INDIA bloc's "Judega Bharat, Jeetega India" tagline as hashtags.
Former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's daughter Achu Oommen on Friday lashed out at those who alleged that Puthuppally was lagging behind in terms of development, and said the people of the constituency have given a fitting response to those who tried to undermine the Congress stalwart's legacy. Achu's brother Chandy Oommen was on Friday declared the winner -- by a huge and historic margin -- of the bypoll to the Puthuppally seat, which had been represented by their father for over 50 years in the state Assembly. Congress's Chandy Oommen defeated CPI(M) candidate Jaick C Thomas by a margin of 37,719 votes.
The Congress on Friday said the victory of four INDIA bloc candidates in bypolls to seven seats proves that the people have accepted the opposition alliance as an alternative to the BJP.
Congress deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari said the results announced on Friday are only a trailer to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when INDIA bloc will win majority across regions.
The "bumper" victory of Samajwadi Party candidate Sudhakar Singh in Ghosi confirms "my claim that India's candidate will get more than 50 percent votes on every seat", Tiwari said.
"This victory is the victory of 'INDIA' and those who were in doubt till now will become determined, and will give their everything to make 'INDIA' win and will save the country's democracy and defeat dictatorship," he said in a statement.
Chandy Oommen registered a historic win in Puthuppally Assembly constituency in Kerala, while TMC wrested the Dhupguri seat from BJP.

The BJP on Friday put up a brave face after its defeat in the Dhupguri assembly by-election in West Bengal, saying it may not have won the seat but the people of the state will deliver a "crushing blow" to the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The ruling TMC wrested the Dhupguri assembly seat in Jalpaiguri district from the BJP in a by-election.
"The BJP may not have won the Dhupguri assembly constituency in West Bengal but we are grateful to all the voters and karyakartas, who ensured that the BJP holds on to its vote share, despite a hostile and oppressive TMC regime," BJP's co-incharge for the state Amit Malviya said in a post on X.
Malviya said that the "marginal win" for the ruling TMC, just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is an indication of “times ahead”.
North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor and senior BJP leader, Himanta Biswa Sarma Friday expressed his gratitude to the voters of Tripura for the wins by BJP candidates in by-election to two assembly seats. He congratulated BJP candidates for winning Boxanagar seat by over 30,000 votes and Dhanpur seat by 18,871 votes.
Congress's Chandy Oommen, who retained the party's bastion Puthuppally with a historic margin in the September 5 bypoll, will take oath as its new MLA on Monday, filling the seat left vacant by the death of his father and party stalwart Oommen Chandy.
The ruling BJP on Friday retained the Bageshwar assembly seat in Uttarakhand with its candidate Parwati Dass defeating Congress' Basant Kumar by more than 2,400 votes in a closely contested bypoll.
Dass got 33,247 votes while Kumar polled 30,842 votes, Bageshwar District Magistrate and returning officer Anuradha Pal said.
The BJP won by 2,405 votes, she said.
The three other candidates in the fray -- Uttarakhand Kranti Dal's Arjun Kumar Dev, Samajwadi Party's Bhagwati Prasad and Uttarakhand Parivartan Party's Bhagwat Kohli -- lost their deposits getting 857, 637 and 268 votes, respectively.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday congratulated his party candidate Sudhakar Singh, who is leading in Ghosi Assembly bypolls by a huge margin, saying that this is a "victory" of the INDIA bloc and that it will continue in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
According to the Election Commission of India, the Samajwadi Party candidate is leading by over 30,000 votes and has garnered over 88,000 votes, in the latest trends. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Dara Singh Chauhan, who is trailing, has received only 38.67 per cent vote share.

Dealing a crushing blow to Kerala's ruling LDF, Congress candidate Chandy Oommen on Friday retained for the party-led UDF, the Puthuppally assembly seat, which his father and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy held for over half-a-century.
Chandy Oommen trounced his main rival Jaick C Thomas of CPI(M) by a huge and historic margin in the bypoll. The 37-year-old Oommen defeated Thomas by a margin of 37,719 votes in the bypoll battle that saw a nearly month-long vigorous campaigning by leaders of the Congress, CPI(M), and BJP for their respective party candidates.
While Oommen gathered 80,144 votes, Thomas could get only 42,425 votes.
BJP leader Amit Malviya on Friday congratulated BJP as the party won Tripura's Boxanagar and Dhanpur assembly seats in the bypolls. "End of the road for the Communists, in what was once their bastion," he wrote.
"North Bengal is totally with us...in Dhupguri, it was a seat of BJP and we won the election. I congratulate all the people of Dhupguri. So wherever BJP lost and INDIA party won, I congratulate all of them", said TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
The BJP hailed its victory in the bypolls to the Dhanpur and Boxanagar Assembly seats in Tripura on Friday and said it is the end of the road for the communists in the northeastern state, which was once known as a Left bastion.
The saffron party gave the credit for its victory in the Tripura bypolls to the "strong and widely recognised" leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his mantra of "Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas", and said the results show the people's "approval" to the developmental work carried out by the party's "double-engine" government in the state.
"I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people of Tripura for making the BJP victorious in the Boxanagar and Dhanpur assembly bye-elections," Home Minister Amit Shah said in a post on X.
Criticising the state party leadership's failure to fix the organisational gaps for the defeat in the Dhupguri by-poll, party national secretary Anupam Hazra Friday called for "proper" self-assessment and fixing of the lacunae ahead of the Lok Sabha poll.
The ruling TMC wrested the Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Friday from the BJP in the September 5 by-election. TMC candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy, a college professor, won the seat by over 4,000 votes. His nearest rival was BJP's Tapasi Roy, the widow of a CRPF jawan killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021.
"I think it is high time that there is proper self-assessment and organisational gaps are fixed ahead of the Lok Sabha poll. We should take measures to fix our lacunae at the earliest," Hazra told news agency PTI.
Kerala's Puthuppally assembly constituency saw son of late Congress stalwart Oommen Chandy, Chandy Oommen win the bypoll, breaking father's record, tending a blow to the Communist Party of India government in the state.
Chandy Ommen won from Puthuppally by around 37000 votes.

Congratulating the people, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Friday, "I want to extend my gratitude to the voters of Bageshwar. I want to congratulate Parvati Das, and this win is a homage to Chandan Das. We will complete his unfinished work and his dreams. Once again, I congratulate the people of Bageshwar for supporting the policies of PM Modi in the country and Uttarakhand."
JMM candidate Bebi Devi won the by-election to the Dumri assembly seat in Jharkhand's Giridih district on Friday by defeating AJSU party nominee Yashoda Devi by over 17,000 votes, according to a district administration official.
The JMM candidate who is also the INDIA block nominee got about 1,35,480 votes while NDA candidate Yashoda Devi got about 1,18,380 votes, the official said.
Bebi Devi is the the wife former Jharkhand minister Jagarnath Mahto, whose death in April necessitated the by-election.
She termed her victory as a 'true tribute' to Mahto who had represented the seat since 2004.
The polling for the by-election was held on September 5. Of the total 2.98 lakh eligible voters, 64.84 per cent had cast their votes.
The BJP on Friday retained the Bageshwar assembly seat in Uttarakhand with its candidate Parwati Dass defeating Congress' Basant Kumar by more than 2,400 votes.
Dass polled 33,247 votes while Kumar got 30,842 votes, Bageshwar District Magistrate and returning officer Anuradha Pal said.
The BJP won by 2,405 votes, she declared.
Bypoll to the seat was held on September 5 with 55.44 per cent of the electorate casting their vote.
Parwati Dass, who won the seat, is wife of the late Chandan Ram Dass whose death in April this year had necessitated the bypoll.
Her husband had been winning the seat consecutively since 2007.
This is the fifth time in a row that the BJP has bagged the seat.
The three other candidates in the fray have all lost their deposits.
BJP candidate Parwati Dass was leading by 2,726 votes over the Congress' Basant Kumar as counting of votes polled in the Bageshwar assembly bypoll in Uttarakhand progressed on Friday.
At the end of the 13th round of counting, the BJP candidate had polled 31,411 votes while the Congress candidate got 28,685 votes, Bageshwar District Magistrate Anuradha Pal said.
The 14th round of counting continues, she said.
Samajwadi Party candidate Sudhakar Singh strengthened his lead over his BJP rival Dara Singh Chauhan with a margin of 22,923 votes after the 17th round of counting in the Ghosi assembly bypoll in Uttar Pradesh on Friday.
According to the Election Commission (EC), while Singh has garnered 66,707 votes so far, Chauhan has got 43,784 votes. There will be 34 rounds of counting.

Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala also reacted to Chandy's win and said that the spectacular victory in the Puthuppally bye-elections was a clear message to the Centre and the state government that they had thrown out both parties.
"The spectacular victory in the Puthuppally bye-elections is a clear message to the Modi and Pinarayi Vijayan governments. Both the BJP and CPM have been thrown out by the people of Puthuppally. No by-election in Kerala has had such a landslide margin. The message is very clear," he added.
"I was expecting these results because people of Puthupally were waiting to punish those people... It is a punishment by the people's court in Puthupally against those people...My request to CPM and government, please tell the people of Kerala that 'we are sorry about what we've done'...," Congress leader AK Antony said.
JMM's Bebi Devi was leading by 6,536 votes over her nearest AJSU Party rival Yashoda Devi in the by-election to the Dumri Assembly seat in Jharkhand's Giridih district on Friday, officials said.
After 18 rounds of counting, the JMM candidate, who is the INDIA bloc nominee, secured 72,042 votes, while the AJSU party candidate, an NDA nominee, got 65,506 votes, they said.

At the end of the 10th round of counting, the BJP candidate had polled 25,094 votes while the Congress candidate got 23,053 votes, Bageshwar District Magistrate Anuradha Pal said. There will be 14 rounds of counting, she said.
Polling to the reserved SC seat in the Kumaon Division was held on September 5 when 55.44 per cent of the nearly 1.2 lakh voters exercised the franchise. (PTI)

AJSU Party candidate Yashoda Devi was leading by 1,551 votes over her nearest JMM rival Bebi Devi in the by-election to the Dumri Assembly seat in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Friday, officials said.
After seven rounds of counting, the AJSU party candidate, an NDA nominee, secured 25,557 votes, while the JMM candidate, who is the INDIA bloc nominee, got 24,006 votes, they said.
All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen candidate Abdul Mobin Rizvi was in the third place with 1,129 votes. (PTI)
