India-Canada News Highlights: India desists issuing new visas for Canadians

India-Canada News Live Updates: Canada made it clear on Friday that it does not tolerate acts of aggression, hate, intimidation, or the incitement of fear within its borders.

India-Canada News Live: People familiar with the matter said the reference to 'politically-condoned hate crimes' in the advisory pointed to the reluctance of the Canadian government to crack down on the activities of groups and individuals espousing the cause of Khalistan or an independent Sikh homeland. (AFP)

India-Canada News Live Updates: Canada issued a statement on Friday condemning acts of aggression, hate, intimidation, or any form of incitement that promotes fear, and stressed that such actions are not tolerated in the country.

This statement comes in response to the circulation of an online video in which Hindu Canadians are reportedly told to depart from the country.

Public Safety Canada, the department responsible for matters of public safety, emergency management, national security, and emergency preparedness, said the circulation of the video is offensive and hateful and is an affront to all Canadians and "the values we hold dearly".

"There is no place in Canada for hate," it said in a post on X, adding, “Acts of aggression, hate, intimidation or incitement of fear have no place in this country and only serve to divide us. We urge all Canadians to respect one another and follow the rule of law. Canadians deserve to feel safe in their communities."

In Parliament, the Canadian PM said the country's intelligence agencies have been investigating the allegations after Nijjar was gunned down on June 18 outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia.

With the worsening relations, a big question loom over India-Canada trade relations as Canada ranks as the 18th most substantial overseas contributor to India's economy, funneling approximately $3.3 billion into the country from April 2000 to March 2023. This Canadian investment share constitutes roughly 0.5 percent of the cumulative influx of foreign direct investment (FDI) in India during this period.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that the murder of an Indian separatist leader in the other country is ‘extremely serious’. The remarks came mere hours after the lawmaker asserted that "credible allegations" linked Indian agents to the June slaying of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi has however dismissed the Canadian government's accusations as ‘absurd’.

Meanwhile, The US has been and will continue to remain in touch with Indians at high levels despite Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations that the Indian government was behind the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Thursday (local time).

“...We are now seeing a new phenomenon where immigrants to Canada have become Canadian citizens but are not doing anything in Canadian politics. They're focusing on how to actually do damage to their country of origin. To my mind, that is a very dangerous development. And, Canada really has to examine its own approach to these people. It's all very well to claim outrage that a citizen has been killed in Canada. In any case, there is, as far as I'm aware, no evidence that any Indian government body had anything to do with it because we know that, unfortunately, this fringe terrorist group has a number of factions... So, my own view is that could have been any other explanation for what happened. In any case, whatever's happening, why their own citizens are allowed with impunity to behave in this manner, threatening the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and good, interests of a friendly country. There's something only the Canadians can answer," he said.
