Amid forecast of heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, schools and colleges in the two states have been shut today. The examinations of Madras University and Anna University have also been postponed in view of the heavy rainfall forecast in the area. Heavy rainfall for the past two days caused waterlogging in the residential areas of Muthuramalinga Thevar Nagar of Rameswaram on Sunday, disrupting normal life.

Monsoon fury leaves 25 dead in Tamil Nadu

As many as 25 people have died in various rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu since November 29, the state government said on Monday. As the North-East monsoon intensifies in the state, nearly 1,000 people have been accommodated in relief camps in Tuticorin, Cuddalore and Tirunelveli districts which bore the brunt of rain fury.

Heavy rains to continue in Tamil Nadu

Due to convergence of strong northeasterly winds, the ongoing heavy to very heavy rainfall activity over Tamil Nadu is very likely to continue for the next two days, said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday. According to the weather forecast agency, a heavy downpour is expected to batter a few places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal in the next week.

Airlines travel advisory

Due to heavy rain in Chennai, traffic congestion is expected. Customers travelling from Chennai are advised to allow additional time for their journey to the Airport.

Flood alert issued in TN's Erode district

A flood alert has been issued to people living on the banks of river Bhavani in this western district of Tamil Nadu as a dam built across it has surplussed in the wake of copious rains in catchment areas, officials said on Monday, PTI reported. The water level in the Lower Bhavani Project reservoir reached its maximum of 105 feet and the storage crossed 32 tmc feet against maximum of 32.8 tmc ft, prompting the Public Works Department authorities to more than triple discharge from 3,500 cusecs to 11,950 cusecs on Monday morning.

15 people killed in wall collapse in Tamil Nadu

15 persons died after a compound wall collapsed and damaged three houses in Nadoor Kannappan Layout in Mettupalayam today morning, ANI reported. Rescue operation underway.

Exams of Madras University, Anna University postponed

Examinations of Madras University and Anna University scheduled for today have been postponed in view of heavy rainfall forecast in the area.

Holiday declared in schools, colleges

A holiday has also been declared for tomorrow in schools in Puducherry due to the same reason.

Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority said, "Holiday has been declared for tomorrow in schools and colleges in Tiruvallur, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram. Holiday declared for schools in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore and Chennai."

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry likely to receive more rains: IMD

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will receive rains in the next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Sunday."Due to low atmospheric pressure, there will be heavy and moderate rain in almost all the districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry," said N Puviarasan, Director, IMD Chennai. The IMD official has also urged fishermen not to venture into the sea near Kanyakumari sea, Maldives and Lakshadweep for the next couple of days.
