Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his appointment on December 19 to discuss rain and the flood situation in southern parts of the state. In order to deliberate on the extremely heavy rainfall and flooding in southern districts of Tamil Nadu, related damage and relief and rescue initiatives, Stalin has written to Modi seeking his appointment on Tuesday, an official release here said. It is also to discuss expeditious release of Central funds to the state to tackle damage due to the recent rains in Chennai and nearby districts.
As the extremely heavy rainfall continued in the south districts of Tamil Nadu, state Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday said that he has instructed party cadres from the rain-affected districts to assist in the ongoing relief work.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that he is monitoring the relief work and is in contact with officials.
Intense rainfall and very heavy inundation, unseen in recent times, overwhelmed four southern districts of Tamil Nadu and Chief Minister M K Stalin arrived on Monday in Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss relief initiatives.

Due to incessant rains in southern Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force on Monday joined hands with the Indian Army to help with the unprecedented flooding and rains in Tamil Nadu.
"On December 18, Tamil Nadu received unprecedented rains in the last 24 hours that have caused extensive flooding in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. The IAF responded swiftly and tasked Air Force Station Sulur with humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, which is currently being undertaken by MI -17 V5 helicopter," the Indian Air Force said in a post on 'X'.
As the Southern Tamil Nadu faces severe flood crisis due to heavy rains that have lashed the region in the last 24 hours. The state and central governments have launched massive rescue and relief operations to help the affected people.

Expecting a heavy rainfall, the Tamil Nadu government declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, private institutions, banks and financial institutions the these districts.
Chennai Weather Live Updates: The India Meteorological Department reported on Monday that Kayalpattinam in the Thoothukudi district of southern Tamil Nadu recorded a rainfall of 95 centimeters. In response to inquiries about the unprecedented nature of this rainfall in Tamil Nadu, a meteorological official stated that confirmation would be provided after verification.
Additionally, the temple town of Tiruchendur, also in the Thoothukudi district, experienced extremely heavy rainfall ranging from 62 to 69 centimeters. Various other regions, such as Manjolai in Tirunelveli district (55 centimeters) and Gundar Dam in Tenkasi district (51 centimeters), recorded rainfall exceeding 50 centimeters, as indicated in an IMD bulletin.
Chennai Weather Live Updates: "As the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam reached 137.50 feet on Monday and the inflow into the dam increased due to rains in the catchment area, the Tamil Nadu government announced that the dam's shutters will be opened in a phased manner from 10 am on December 19 (Tuesday) to release a maximum of 10,000 cusecs of water," an official statement said here.

Chennai Weather Live Updates: Due to flooding in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, an estimated 800 train passengers found themselves marooned in Srivaikuntam, as reported by an official on Monday. The individuals affected were those aboard a Chennai-bound express train originating from the temple town of Tiruchendur. Stranded in Srivaikuntam, a region severely affected by floods, these passengers endured nearly 20 hours of immobilization.

Kayalpattinam in Thoothukudi district of southern Tamil Nadu has registered 95 CM rainfall, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday. When asked if the 95 CM rainfall was unprecedented in Tamil Nadu, a Met official said it will be confirmed following verification. Extremely heavy rainfall was also witnessed in the temple town of Tiruchendur also in Thoothukudi district, which was in the range of 62 CM to 69 CM.
Several regions registered rainfall in excess of 50 CM including Manjolai in Tirunelveli district (55 CM) and Gundar Dam in Tenkasi district (51 CM), an IMD bulletin said. Tirunelveli (30 CM) and Palayamkottai near Tirunelveli (44 CM) were among other regions that witnessed very heavy rainfall. The rainfall was for the 24-hour duration starting December 17 (8.30 AM) to December 18 (8.30 AM).
As the extremely heavy rainfall continued in the south districts of Tamil Nadu, state Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday said that he has instructed party cadres from the rain-affected districts to assist in the ongoing relief work.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that he is monitoring the relief work and is in contact with officials.
Taking to social media platform, X, Stalin said, "Since yesterday, I have been talking to ministers and high government officials about the condition of the southern districts affected by heavy rains and monitoring the recovery and relief work."

As per media reports, due to heavy rains, several Tuticorin-bound flights were also diverted or were cancelled. Currently which flights have been cancelled or diverted is not known. Earlier on 17 December, IndiGo in a post on X had informed its passengers of flight delays and cancellations at Tuticorin airport due to bad weather.

After extremely heavy rains in southern districts of Tamil Nadu raised the water level in the Tamiraparani river, DMK MP Kanimozhi has said that relief work is afoot to evacuate affected people in villages along the river banks to safer places.
The DMK MP on Sunday advised the villagers living along the Tamiraparani river to cooperate with the district administration.
Taking to the social media platform, X, Kanimozhi said, "Important warning. Due to excess water released from dams in Tirunelveli district and excess rain water is coming in Tamiraparani river now (17.12.2023 time 10.00 pm), revenue department, police and local government are working to transport the public living in the villages along the banks of river Tamiraparani from Marudur and Tiruvaikundam dam areas in Thoothukudi district, Kaliavur to Punnakayal to the relief camps. Department, Women's Programme, Public Works Department, Fire Department and all departments are taking joint action."
"Therefore, the villagers along the Tamiraparani River are advised to cooperate with the district administration and move out of their residences to safer areas/nearby relief camps," she added.
In Thoothkudi district, taluka Srivaikuntam received 525 mm of rainfall on Sunday and a extremely heavy rainfall in the area is predicted. Moreover, Tiruchender, Sathankulam, Kayathar, Ottapidram are also expected to get extremely heavy rainfall.
Extremely heavy rainfall continued in the south districts of Tamil Nadu on Monday, as Palayamkottai recorded 26 cm, and Kanyakumari recorded 17 cm of rainfall.
Meanwhile, flood-affected people in the Tirunelveli district moved to a shelter camp. A visual from the shelter home showed people lining up for ration.
In Thoothkudi district, taluka Srivaikuntam received 525 mm of rainfall on Sunday and a extremely heavy rainfall in the area is predicted. Moreover, Tiruchender, Sathankulam, Kayathar, Ottapidram are also expected to get extremely heavy rainfall.
Rainfall continued at night in the Thoothukudi district, and 40 lakes in the Kovilpatti area have reached their full capacity. According to IMD predictions, very heavy rains has been predicted in over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts. Thoothukudi witnessed severe waterlogging due to heavy rainfall. Videos showed water entering in homes. Amid heavy rains, schools, colleges, private institutions, banks and financial institutions in these four districts will also remail shut today.
Due to this heavy rain, the rivers in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu is overflowing. The rivers and lakes around Kovilpatti have reached their full capacity and the water started overflowing from the lakes.
Also, after the rainwater started flowing out of the river in the Koosalipatti and Inam Maniyachi areas, sandbags and JCB machines were used to stop the water.
"40 lakes in Kovilpatti Panchayat are full. Two lakes were damaged and we repaired them. We are continuously monitoring other lakes too. If there is a breach in the lake, we are ready to fix it immediately," said Rajesh, District Development Officer, Thoothukkudi district.
