Chhattisgarh: 31 Naxalites gunned down in an encounter in Bijapur
In Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, twelve Naxalites were killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces during an anti-Naxalite operation. Two security personnel were also killed, raising the total Naxalite casualties this year to 81
Chhattisgarh: Security forces killed atleast 31 Naxalites in an encounter in Bijapur, reported PTI on Sunday. Two security personnel were also killed during the exchange of fire.
The exchange of fire between Naxalites and security officials broke out and continued for more than five hours at a forest in Indravati National Park area on Sunday. The gunfight began when the security personnel team was out on an anti-Naxalite operation, a senior police official told PTI.
Initially, the number of Naxalites shot down by the security officials was 12. Later in the day, PTI reported that the number increased to 31.
The security officials frequently carry out encounter operations in Chhattisgarh and other nearby areas to hunt down Naxalites. This year, around 81 Naxalites have been gunned down by security forces in separate encounters in the state, reported PTI.
Weapons and explosives seized from encounter site
The security officials also seized a huge amount of weapons and explosives from the site. Further investigation is underway as the Chhattisgarh police continue to carry out encounter operation in collaboration with CRPF and other auxiliary forces in India.
Chhattisgarh Naxal Encounter: Two personnel killed
Two security personnel, one belonging to the state police's District Reserve Guard and the other from the Special Task Force, were also killed in the gunfight and two others suffered injuries.
Two other jawans were injured during the action and are receiving treatment at hospital. They are out of danger and were airlifted to a better medical facility for treatment, reported PTI citing Inspector General of Police, Bastar Range, Sundarraj P.
The search operation is still underway to gun down other Naxalites from the group. Bijapur district is a part of Bastar division of Chhattisgarh. Bastar is an active spot of Naxal movement and witnesses frequent encounters. Out of th 81 Naxalites gunned down in the state so far, 65 were killed in the Bastar division.
