Hyderabad-based Biological E. has sharply cut the price of its covid-19 vaccine Corbevax from 840 to 250 per dose at private vaccination centres.

The end-user has to pay 400 per dose, including taxes and administration charges, the company said in a statement.

The decision comes within weeks of Biological E. receiving emergency use authorization (EUA) for children between 5 and 12 years of age.

The previous private market price for the vaccine was 990 a dose, including taxes and vaccine administration charges.

Corbevax is also offered in a single-dose vial. This eliminates vaccine wastage, which is a major advantage for private hospitals.

Individuals can currently book a slot through the Co-WIN portal for children aged 12 to 17.

So far, 43.9 million doses of Corbevax have been administered to children across the country and the company has supplied close to 100 million doses to the Union government, it said.

Biological E has developed Corbevax in collaboration with the Texas Children’s Hospital and the Baylor College of Medicine.

Prior to receiving EUA for vaccination, the company conducted phase II and III multicentre clinical trials on 624 children aged 5-12 and 12-18.

The Centre started covid-19 vaccination for the age group 12-14 years on 16 March. So far, more than 31.7 million adolescents have been administered the first dose of covid-19 vaccine.
