Odisha Train Accident: Over 233 dead and 900 injured; Here are 10 most fatal train accidents in India in the past

Coromandel Express derails in Odisha's Balasore district and collides with a goods train, this is not the first big Indian Railways accident, here are the biggest ones.

Coromandel express on Friday was involved in a massive accident when four of its coaches derailed in Odisha's Balasore district on Friday evening. Following the derailment, the express train collided head-on with a goods train coming from the opposite direction on the other line, officials said.

The accident happened around 7.20 pm near Bahanaga Bazar station when the train was on the way to Chennai Central station from Shalimar station near Kolkata, they said.

However, this is not the first big Indian Railways accident

Here's taking a look at the biggest Rail accidents in India

1.1981 Bihar Train Disaster 

A passenger train estimated to be carrying around 900 people derailed off the railway track and subsequently sank into the Baghmati river near Saharsa in Bihar and as many as 500 casualties had been estimated.

2. 1995 Firozabad Rail Disaster 

A Delhi-bound Purushottam Express rammed into a stationary Kalindi Express near Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 358 people onboard.

3.1999 Gaisal Train Disaster

Two trains carrying over 2,500 passengers collided near Gaisal, Assam, about 310 miles from Guwahati, killing at least 290 passengers. The trains exploded upon collision as it rammed into each other at a very high speed.

4.1998 Khanna Train Disaster 

The Kolkata bound Jammu Tawi- Sealdah Express rammed into six derailed Frontier Golden Temple Mail coaches bound for Amritsar near Khanna on the Khanna-Ludhiana section of India's Northern Railway in Punjab. The casualties were reported to be at least 212 people.

5. 2002 Howrah-New Delhi Rajdhani Express

Considered the fastest train in India, Howrah-New Delhi Rajdhani Express derailed near Rafiganj station between Gaya and Dehri-on-Sone stations at 10.40 pm killing over 140 people.

6.2010 Gyaneshwari Express Disaster 

A Mumbai-bound Howrah Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express got derailed by an explosion between Khemashuli and Sardiha in West Midnapore district at 1.30 am and got subsequently hit by a goods train. It was reported that at least 170 people lost their lives in this accident. 

7. 2016 Indore Patna Disaster

Indore–Patna Express 19321 derailed near Pukhrayan, Kanpur, India, on 20 November, 2016, killing at least 150 people and injuring more than 150 others.

8.2005 Valigonda Train Tragedy 

A flash flood washed away a small rail bridge on 29 October 2005, and a "Delta Fast Passenger" train traveling on it derailed at the damaged section of the line, killing at least 114 people and injuring over 200 others.

9.2010 Sainthia Train Crash 

On 19 July, 2010, the Uttar Banga Express and the Vananchal Express rammed into each other in Sainthia, West Bengal killing about 63 people and injuring over 165 people.

10.2012 Hampi Express Accident 

On 22 May, 2012, the Hubli-Bangalore Hampi Express collided with a goods train near Andhra Pradesh. The train's four bogies derailed, and one of them caught fire, killing about 25 passengers and charring several others, while injuring about 43 others.

(Please note these are considered the biggest accidents. India through the years has seen far many more Railways accidents than listed here. None of the tragedies, lives lost are smaller than the ones mentioned here)
