Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee's nephew and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has sharply criticized the central government over the Coromandel train accident while demanding the resignation of railway minister.
Taking to Facebook, Banerjee wrote, "The visuals are heart-wrenching. Over one hundred lives have been lost and the Prime Minister bears a considerable amount of responsibility. My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured and if there remains a semblance of conscience, the Railway Minister should resign. NOW!"

Bhartiya Janta Party has hit back at the TMC and party supremo Mamta Banerjee asking if train accidents did not happen during her reign as the railway minister. BJP Bengal spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya was quoted by news agency PTI as saying, “When Mamata Banerjee was the railway minister, then too train accidents happened, did she resign? The answer is no. The TMC should stop politicising a tragic accident,"
A tragic accident involving Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train occurred near Balasore district's Bahanaga Baazar station on Friday. The station lies almost 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar.
According to reports, the incident occurred when several coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express derailed and fell onto the adjacent tracks. The Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express then collided with these coaches, causing its own coaches to capsize. Shortly afterwards, a goods train collided with these derailed coaches.
