Coronavirus cases in India cross 800, highest single-day jump in number of cases

The death toll in India has climbed to 19, according to health ministry

    The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed 800-mark today. As many as 110 coronavirus patients were diagnosed on Friday, taking the total COVID-19 cases in the country to 834. There are 748 active coronavirus cases in the country. As many as 66 patients were cured or discharged, health ministry reported.

    The death toll has climbed to 19, according to health ministry. Deaths have been reported from Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

    Kerala confirmed 39 fresh cases of coronavirus infection on Friday. The total number of COVID-19 patients in the state has surged to 164, the highest in the country. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the situation as "serious".

    Maharashtra is also severely affected state with more than 150 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Mumbai witnessed four deaths related to COVID-19 infection.

    On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered a 21-day nationwide lockdown to mitigate the virus spread. Only the essential services remain functional during the lockdown. In a drastic move, India cancelled all the international and domestic flights till April 14. Indian Railways suspended all the passenger trains till mid April.

    Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) continues to maintain that there is no evidence of community transmission in the country yet. ICMR floated a guidance for rapid testing kits which can generate results for exposure to the novel coronavirus within 30 minutes
