    India witnessed a record surge in coronavirus count today as nearly 600 fresh cases were reported in last 24 hours. This was the highest single-day count since the coronavirus outbreak in the country. The total number of COVID-19 patients in India surged to 2,902. Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh registered a huge jump in number of cases this week. The death toll in the country climbed to 68. At least 12 new deaths were recorded in last 24 hours.

    There were 2,650 active coronavirus patients in the country, according to ministry of health and welfare. As many as 183 people were recovered from the deadly disease.

    Maharashtra remained the worst affected state in the country with 423 coronavirus cases. A total of 88 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Maharashtra on Friday. Mumbai, India's financial capital, has so far confirmed over 200 COVID-19 cases. Death toll in the state reached 19, the highest in the country.

    Coronavirus infections in Delhi also rose to a new single-day high as the state recorded 167 new cases on Friday. There were 386 coronavirus cases in the national capital.

    Most of these fresh cases were linked to a religious congregation held in Delhi's Nizammudin area last month. India has at least 647 COVID-19 cases that were related to Delhi's event, reported health ministry. Coronavirus patients linked to Delhi's conference were traced in Andaman and Nicobar, Assam, Delhi, Himachal, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttrakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

    Tamil Nadu also saw a double-digit hike in coronavirus cases on Friday. At least 102 people in Tamil Nadu tested positive for COVID-19 in last 24 hours. As many as 100 of these were related to Delhi's congregation. The coronavirus cases surged to 161 in Andhra Pradesh, 295 in Kerala, 158 in Telangana and 128 in Karnataka.

    Over 50 fresh cases of novel coronavirus were confirmed from Uttar Pradesh, taking the total count in the state to 174. Haryana reported 49 COVID-19 cases. The number of COVID-19 patients climbed to 179 in Rajasthan, 104 in Madhya Pradesh and 95 in Gujarat.

    As many as 24 people diagnosed with COVID-19 infection in Assam. Two cases were confirmed in Manipur, one each in Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. The total number of coronavirus cases jumped to 75 in Jammu & Kashmir and 14 in Ladakh.

    There are 29 coronavirus cases in Bihar, 18 in Chandigarh, nine in Chhattisgarh, six each in Goa and Himachal Pradesh and two in Jharkhand. At least 63 were diagnosed positive with coronavirus infection in West Bengal. Odisha reported five COVID-19 patients.

    A total of 182 labs in India were allowed to test for novel coronavirus, ICMR's Manoj Muhekar told PTI. On Thursday, 8,000 tests were conducted for COVID-19, which is highest-ever in India.

    The novel coronavirus infected almost 1.1 million people and killed more than 59,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. The US recorded more than 275,000 cases and over 7,400 deaths. The New York City area had the most fatalities, at more than 1,500, the data show. Italy, the next most hard-hit country, had about 120,000 COVID-19 cases.
