Coronavirus cases in India rise to 108; highest in Maharashtra

Maharashtra with 32 active patients now has the highest number of cases in the country

    The number of cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in India rose to 108 after fresh cases were reported in Delhi, Telangana and Maharashtra over the last 24 hours.

    Maharashtra with 32 active patients now has the highest number of cases in the country, surpassing Kerala which has 22.

    A 49-year-old person from Aurangabad, who had a travel history of Russia and Kazakhistan, became the 32nd patient of Maharashtra and first from the city, state health minister Rajesh Tope said on Twitter.

    From the 32 cases in Maharashtra, Mumbai metropolitan area accounts for nine of them and 15 are from Pune.

    Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Karnataka have 11, seven and six cases respectively.

    The rise in number of patients in the country has prompted the central and state governments to come up with various measure, including suspension of visas and shutdown of various public places in many states.

    Since the disease started in China, there are now more than 156,000 cases across the world. While the number of patients -- below 81,000-- has become steady in China, those in other countries has increased. The virus, which has been declared pandemic by the World Health Organisation(WHO), has claimed 5,833 lives globally so far.

    According to the WHO, Europe has now become the new epicentre of the disease. Italy now accounts for over 21,000 cases, with 1,441 deaths.
