New Delhi: The Indian aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed all scheduled airlines to disinfect and deep-clean aircraft once in a day, the agency said in a circular on Tuesday.
"All aircraft shall be subjected to disinfection during transit halts when there are no passengers on board," the DGCA said in the circular.
"In case transit passengers are on board, at least the lavatories and the galleries should be disinfected," it said adding that international flights should be subjected to deep-cleaning and disinfection processes upon arrival in India.
Mint had on 13 March reported that airlines in India’s chaotic airports are failing to meet the aviation regulator’s guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19, especially on domestic routes and probably fearing flight delays.
DGCA on Tuesday advised the airlines to keep interaction between cabin crew and passengers to a minimum.
"All crew members should be provided with suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in sufficient quantity to use during passenger interaction," the agency added in the circular.
Globally, more than 7,461 people have died due to Covid-19, while the number of those infected stands at over 186,409. Many governments globally, including the US, and India have implemented a temporary travel ban in their country.
