New Delhi: Indian aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has extended the suspension of domestic flights till 14 April to comply with the government's order of a 21-day lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, DGCA said on Friday.

"All domestic operators engaged in scheduled, non-scheduled and private aircraft operations in India shall ensure strict compliance of the order," the watchdog said in a statement.

The government had earlier banned passenger flights on all domestic routes from 25 March to 31 March to arrest the spread of the deadly COVID-19 (coronavirus) in the world’s second-most populous nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 24 March announced a 21-day lockdown for three weeks to contain the spread of the disease that has left more than 24,000 dead across the world.

Globally, the virus has infected over 542,000 people, of which 124,351 have recovered so far, according to data available on the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine website.
