ERNAKULAM: In a first, the Kerala government will appoint 276 doctors on a single day to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic amid a severe crunch of hospital staff in the state, health minister KK Shailaja said in a statement.

As per latest estimates, Kerala has 91 active cases, the second highest in the country after Maharashtra, and over 50,000 people in quarantine.

The doctors will be appointed within a day after conducting job interviews through video conferencing, the minister said. They will be selected by fast-tracking the existing ranking list under the Public Service Commission, the nodal agency for public sector recruitment.

The move is part of mobilising all available resources in view of the emerging crisis, said the minister.

"The health department is taking steps on a war footing in view of the spiraling number of Covid-19 positive cases in the state. Apart from positive cases, if people who are under home quarantine develop symptoms, they could only be treated in isolation rooms," she said.

The Pinarayi Vijayan government enforced a complete lockdown in the state, effective Monday midnight, after it reported 28 fresh cases, the highest in a single day.

"Foreseeing this difficulty, the health department had developed a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. All these plans put together, we have arranged 6,000 isolation beds. Apart from this, we have also arranged Corona care centers that could accommodate 21,866 people at a time. For all of this to work, we will have to escalate our resources including doctors, nurses, medicines, safety equipment, ventilators," she added.

The novel coronavirus has infected at least 381,499 globally, with death toll at 16,557. In India, cases have surged past 500.
