Coronavirus: Karnataka under lockdown, Section 144 in Bengaluru, Mangaluru

Bengaluru city police commissioner imposed section 144 in the city from midnight of 23 March to 31 March

    Bengaluru: Karnataka chief minister B.S.Yediyurappa has extended the lockdown to cover the entire state, including Bengaluru, in a fresh order beyond the nine districts that was earlier under restrictions.

    "After assessing the situation of #covid_19, we have decided to lockdown not just 9 districts but the whole state of Karnataka starting tomorrow till March 31st. I request all citizens to co operate and please stay indoors. #CoronaInKarnataka #fightagainstcorona," Yediyurappa posted on Twitter.

    The chief minister even asked people not to hoard groceries or fall prey to panic.

    The lockdown on all activity except those termed under essential services came after authorities said, people not taking the spread of the virus and social distancing seriously.

    Bengaluru city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has also imposed section 144 in the city from midnight of 23 March to 31 March, restricting people movement and get better compliance of social distancing measures.

    Rao said that stern action will be taken against violators. All flyovers in the city will be shut and there will be restrictions on entry and exit out of Bengaluru.

    Section 144 has been imposed on the coastal city of Mangaluru.

    Several Indian states and cities are on lockdown after a spike in cases of COVID-19 across the country.

    Karnataka now has 33 positive cases, including one death.

    Only industries and factories dealing with essential goods and services, food, medical equipment, drugs, fuel, agricultural inputs etc, shall remain open. The government advised establishments not to remove any worker and asked that paid leave be given.

    Essential stores selling food, ration shops, milk, vegetables, groceries, meat, fish, fruit, wholesale and retail markets will remain open. Liquor shops will remain shut till 31 March.

    Petrol Bunks, gas, LPG. oil shops and related godowns will also remain open. Transportation of all goods is permitted. Hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, optical stores, diagnostic centres and other health and medical related shops. Police and fire services, post offices, urban local bodies and panchayat offices, will remain open.

    Electricity, Water & Municipal services as well as bank teller services. ATMs, Telecom, internet, cable services will remain open.

    The government has permitted ecommerce and home delivery of goods and services.

    Only take aways and home delivery from restaurants will be premitted. Karnataka chief minister B.S.Yediyurappa has said that Indira Canteens will serve free food for the poor.

    Drinking water production, supply and distribution has been allowed.

    The government has directed all foreign returnees to remain under home quarantine and threatened penalties to those who violate them.

    The order also bans all gatherings of more than five people and all prayer gatherings, festivals of all religions shall be stopped.

    The government reiterated that technology companies will extend work from home to all those who do not have to be in their respective offices.

    Government and private inter-city and inter-state bus services will be suspended and restrictions have been placed on plying of private vehicles. Karnataka has already sealed its borders.

    All cab aggregators like Ola, Uber, autorickshaws and other hired services shall be permitted for passenger transport only for procuring essential commodities and medical emergencies.

    Public offices dealing with non-essential services as notified by the government shall remain closed.
