MUMBAI: Maharashtra reported 15 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. While 14 cases have been reported in Mumbai, one tested positive in Pune. With this, the total number of confirmed cases in Maharashtra touched 89, the highest in the country so far.

The new patients had come in contact with eight people who had earlier tested positive and four had history of travel to affected countries, according to a government official.

On Sunday, the death toll in India due to the novel coronavirus rose to seven, while the total number of infected soared to 396.

Gujarat, Bihar and Maharahstra reported a death each on Sunday, while four deaths were earlier reported from Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra and Punjab, according to the health ministry.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), "a total of 396 individuals have been confirmed positive among suspected cases and contacts of known positive cases".

From midnight on Sunday, the Maharashtra government imposed Section 144 under the Code of Criminal Procedure, which prohibits the assembly of more than five people in an area, across the state until 31 March. Appealing to the public to stay indoors and help the government fight the spread of the infection, the state also suspended all rail, private buses, state transport buses and metro services within its borders. No international flights will be allowed into Maharashtra.

The state government, in a press release, said a limited number of buses within cities will ply for essential services. Grocery stores and medical shops will remain open as will banks and financial institutions. Government offices will work with skeletal staff.

A decision to extend Section 144, if needed, will be taken on 31 March, the release said.
