NEW DELHI : A new case of novel coronavirus infection, or Covid-19, was confirmed by the Pune district information office, taking the total number of cases in the city to 9 and those in the country to 75.

“A local resident had returned from America on March 1. He was tested on March 11, and the results were positive. This has taken the total count of coronavirus patients in Pune to nine. The patients are currently being treated, and they are said to be in a stable condition," the district information office said in a tweet on Thursday.

With the new patient, there are now 12 cases in Maharashtra, with two of them in Mumbai. A report by the Press Trust of India on Thursday said that there was one patient confirmed in Nagpur as well.

With the 12 patients, Maharashtra now has the second highest number of cases in the country after Kerala, which has 19. Two more cases were reported by the Kerala government on Thursday.

The rise in number of cases has prompted the Central and state governments across the country to take some drastic steps. The home ministry has conferred health secretary Preeti Sudan with special powers under the Disaster Management Act to take measures to curb the spread of the disease in the country.

On Wednesday, the Centre suspended visas of all foreign nationals coming to the country from Friday till 15 April.

Kerala, Delhi and Haryana have declared the disease an epidemic in their states, with the Delhi government also shutting down cinema theatres, schools and colleges till 31 March.
