BENGALURU: Indian IT major Infosys Ltd has begun sending trainees home in batches from its Mysuru campus as a precautionary measure amid rising cases of COVID-19 in the country, the company said.

"Wherever it is feasible, we are enabling more and more of our employees and trainees to work and learn from home. We are also limiting the number of people at Infosys campuses. Therefore, Infosys has advised trainees residing at its Global Education Center in Mysore to return home as soon as possible," the company said in a statement.

Infosys' Mysuru campus is known to be the largest corporate education centre in the world. Spread over 337 acres, the centre has a capacity to train as many as 14,000 people at a time. It was unclear how many trainees have been sent back so far.

"We are facilitating the logistics and are also ensuring that their training continues via Lex, our digital learning and talent transformation platform," the company added. The trainees will be sent back in batches until Saturday.

The decision comes amid growing number of cases of COVID-19 in the country.

Karnataka had recorded a total of 14 positive cases until Wednesday, while several others were lodged in medical facilities and placed in home quarantine.

The state government has extended its order on closure of malls, theatres and night clubs as well as other places of mass gatherings till the end of the month.

In a move criticised by many, it has also decided to stamp the hands of people who have returned from international destinations.

Some passengers placed under home quarantine were not following instructions and "Therefore, it has been decided to stamp the back of palm of left hand of such passengers with a specially designed stamp which will indicate the last day of quarantine. This will be done using indelible ink," the Karnataka government said in a statement.

Mysuru has also reported a few cases of bird flu and so far around 6,000 birds have been culled.
